Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 8320:

1. Make sure you have the latest version of Desktop Manager installed.
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...93E4F3BB068C22
2. Download the above file to the PC then install it to the PC by running the file you downloaded.
3. Locate the vendor.xml file and delete it. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
4. Plug in BB and Open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.
The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 45 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to DM again and run application loader again and it should load the OS to the device

To find the previous OS for this device... CLICK HERE.

Note: Preinstalled wallpapers and custom folder icons are not included in this release.

Nice find!

Sticked.

devnull 07-16-2008 03:28 PM

I think the line that says:

"Instructions for installing on ANY carrier's 8310"

might be wrong.

Garz08 07-16-2008 03:28 PM

Only found it for 8320 and 8120.

No... it is device specific

rjw3000 07-16-2008 03:54 PM

Not sure if this is any different from the .75/.52 beta I put on mine a week or so ago, but the .75/.52 version works great on my 8320 on T-Mo

Yes, nothing changed from the BETA, very likely since all the app, software and platform #s are all the same.

Wow - if it wasn't for my dumb "connector specific error" I'd have never known about this new OS download. Thanks JS (and Garz)!!!

Downloading it now!

PCgirl 07-16-2008 06:49 PM

^^OK, does anyone have any idea why my installation keeps getting interrupted? I tried it for RUN and SAVE and they both won't install. :?
(BTW, I'm using Vista).

black betty 07-16-2008 07:28 PM

service books delayed about 1/2 hr other then that it really stable uma works, sim card still kicking, memory 2200000000000 no leaks noted. i had .66 so i guess this is a downgrade.

OK, so the link is working...and I am still trying to install DM 4.5 but is there also a separate Handheld software download available? Is it the device manager at the bttom of the page?

dhendricks 07-16-2008 08:50 PM

I've been holding out for an official release before I did anything to my 8320 running 4.2.2.180 on Tmobile.

I installed this update today, other than it taking so long to upgrade, programs seem to work fine. I did have to re-run a few setup things for certain programs (like re-accepting the google maps agreement), and also re-entering the WAP.VOICESTREAM.COM setting in the TCP settings in Network. other than that everything seems to be running smoothly on both UMA and EDGE. Nice upgrade!

JS,

Do you happen to know why my installation keeps getting interrupted? The link is now working, and I also saved it onto my computer so I could try to install at any time. For some reason, I can't get past the installation stage. I was able to download 4.3 earlier today, but it kept giving me the connection setup error, so I looked it up and tried to download 4.2 SP2. That one was interrupted as well, which is when you suggested 4.5. Now 4.5 won't install either. It is driving me insane! I have no DM on the new laptop, which blows because I can't sync/backup my BB on it. :?

I am so ready to chuck this stupid laptop!

wobly 07-16-2008 10:01 PM

I've been running this version for the past 1+ week. It works very well and is very stable. I am running on T Mobile for those worried about their SIM cards.

I've had it around a week as well and Tmobile SIM is still alive.

Voicemail icon is back, UMA works and seems stable. I did a 35 minute test call while using a Motorola H700 bluetooth headset and the call held. Has a memory leak, but its slow and since it starts with much more free memory to begin with, there's less reason to keep checking memory.

With video recording, voice recording, html email, and a better browser, I'm pretty happy. Completely lost any lingering desire for an iphone.

JSanders 07-16-2008 10:41 PM

PCGirl, have you tried loading the DM to your Vista laptop using Administrator rights on the laptop? The vista machine is whoosh over my head, I'm a refuznik, and have stuck with XP for now.

But I know many have had issues loading DM on vista machines.

I'm not sure if I did the administrator thing. I'll try it.

JS - trust me, I wanted XP on this notebook but it was such a PITA to try and get it ordered before the license ran out and then my husband got a notebook at the same time and he didn't care that he got Vista so it would be weird to have one with XP and one with Vista since we bought all the software together and anyway we have other computers that use XP and we're keeping those around as well. But what's weird is that I was able to download DM on my husband's Vista notebook and my first Vista notebook (the one I'm on now is a replacement since the touchscreen on the other tablet sometimes stopped working).

dhollins - I was thinking that it could be an AV issue - I just converted from Norton (just learned it was a resource hog!) to AVG and I haven't been able to turn it off. Any AVG users out there??

PCgirl 07-17-2008 12:25 AM

^^Well, I tried the administrator thing and it didn't work. I tried both the multi-language and the english version. Now I'm trying to figure out how to turn off AVG without having to uninstall it.

nathanotis 07-17-2008 12:42 AM

Is it not as simple as right clicking the icon on the task bar and exiting AVG?

As a side note, I updated, it went fine. Things are working great (not gloating, PCgirl). Thanks all for the walkthroughs, etc.

Upgrade Question!

I am thinking of doing the upgrade to 4.5 Orange UK. I have a Tmo 8320. My question is what will be missing in my phone as far as Tmobile is concerned? Will I be able to Access T-zones for example? Or will my phone basically have all the Orange info in it? IM scared!!! What shall I expect in this upgrade?

I wish it were that simple! There is no right click to exit or disable. So, I decided to just go for it and unsinstall the AVG and it still didn't work. Grrrr. :x

I tried downloading from the site and also saving and downloading. I tried both the English version and the Multi-language. I just can't believe it is this difficult! :?

Oh, and when I did the optimizing, I didn't delete vendor.xml because I only upgraded to the latest T-mo version and I had too much trouble trying to locate where the unwanted files (vendor themes, etc.) would be. I was able to delete the videos and wallpapers and that freed up enough memory for me. I was up at like 25MB before third party apps and now I hover around 21MB so I'm good to go. If I don't delete vendor.xml when upgrading to 4.5, will I get all the all the other vendor stuff, such as Orange? Then I will definitely have to find and delete them.

John Clark 07-17-2008 02:37 AM

The new OS installs all new java folders for the new OS. Yes, you have to do the optimizing all over again with each new OS.

Oh, OK. I almost had a heart attack when I did it the first time because after I did it I got the "WHITE SCREEN OF DEATH".

Then I did a few battery pulls and then I got the weird all-white "NONE" theme with the stick figure icons and then from there I finally got things fixed.

I may just wait untill the official T-Mo 4.5 comes out. Or maybe wait for the Javelin. At this point I'm just trying to get DM on my Vista notebook so I can sync and backup.

Thanks for your reply and help.

I've been using the Beta version of over a week now and a friend just updated his curve to the Orange UK 4.5 ealier.

They are both the same, no change what so ever. I'd imagine there is no reason at all for users with the pre release beta to change it to this one.

I'm using 180, the official T-Mo OS of the moment, so at this point I'm just trying to get any version of DM on my laptop to install! ;-)

I have found one bug. The "move" option in the media manager only works properly the first time. I took some photos that I wanted to move to a separate folder. The first one was fine, but after that I couldn't do it. I could go to the target folder but would get no menu option to "move here." To move another photo, I have to exit the media manager then re-enter it and move another photo. This bug is robust, in that I've tried battery pull, etc., and it's the same every time. I am using the beta release.

I couldn't find a link to the new OS. It just lists desktop software versions, etc etc. Help anyone?

sgtcasey 07-17-2008 09:21 AM

Some things I've noticed so far from this version:

1. My free memory last night after the install was 24MB. This morning it was 19MB. I ran the memory cleanup and it was still 19MB. I did a battery pull and now I'm up to 25MB.

2. The Preloaded Pictures folder is empty. I wanted to get rid of the default blue wallpaper but there was nothing on the device to change it to. A previous beta version of 4.5 had the usual Blackberry theme pictures and such. Nothing here. I may try reinstalling tonight.

3. I use UMA at home, so my 8320 says T-Mobile - TheHouse when I'm at home. I leave Wi-Fi on more or less all the time and when I got to work this morning my device was on the EDGE network with the Wi-Fi icon grayed out, but it said T-Mobile - HotSpot at the top. I brought up the menu and then went back to the main screen and that cleared up.

4. I have two t-zones icons after the install. I checked real quick to see if I had duplicate service books, but I didn't. I just hid one of them (I should hide both since I never use it).

Use the link in the first post of this thread. It will take you to Blackberry's website. Pick your device from the drop down box and then on the next page pick the version you want to download.

Something else I've noticed with two different versions of 4.5 now is reboots when watching videos on http://m.youtube.com.

Previously as soon as I tried to watch them with a beta version of 4.5 it would reboot every single time. Now I just had a reboot with this version of 4.5 after stopping a video then trying to start it back up. It wouldn't start so I closed out the media player and the handset rebooted.

Go to John Clarks Tip for BB Optimization. There is a great step by step tutorial on how to free up memory. See the link below.

Go to Options, select Security Options, then select Memory Cleaning. Enable it and check out all the different options. If you press the Menu key after enabling it you should also see a Clean Now option.

I'm still messing with mine but I haven't really noticed this doing anything to free up memory on my device.

Dave

JSanders 07-17-2008 10:57 AM

It won't.

Memory cleaning only makes your deleted items "securely" deleted... as in higher wiped standards. It won't free any additional.

gatortone 07-17-2008 10:58 AM

sgtcasey - ever notice a reboot while on a phone conversation? I've had a reboot while watching a video, but I also get them while talking on the phone.

sgtcasey 07-17-2008 10:59 AM

Ah okay, that makes sense.

I just found the option to add the icon to the main menu that when you select it runs the Clean Now process.

Options > Security Options > Memory Cleaning > Show Icon on Home Screen

The icon looks like a shredder on my default T-Mobile Zen theme.

Okay, enough messing with the phone. I'd better get *some* work done today. :)

I upgraded yesterday. It took about a hour and a half for the upgrade and restore. Everything is working ok so far.

Before the update, I ran close to 27m free... After the update, and adding a couple new apps, I'm closer to 22m. I was just getting ready to ask whether, post-update, I needed to run JC's memory Optimization.

Is it generally advised?

Thanks (I love this place)

boofnut 07-17-2008 11:31 AM

after i upgraded to this last night (which is completely stable and works great) I have two Tzones icons. I saw an earlier post saying that someone had the same issue. any reason why there are two tzones icons? anyone else have this?

the Memory Optimization must be run with the OS upgrade, generally, but you could do it again, if you want.

Two TZones icons is normal for some reason.

It is very rare for any "independent firmware" to be released. Honestly, there is no difference in "independent firmware" than the firmwares released by the carriers. The only difference is the vendor.xml. The vendor.xml is deleted anyway, making it an "independent firmware." So, in essence, there really is no such thing as "independent firmware" as it's all the same.

Can't find "Memory Cleaning" option

I've looked and looked for the "Memory Cleaning" option under Options>Security Options, but can't find it. Is it because I still have OS 4.2 still installed on my Curve 8320?

ash146 07-17-2008 12:07 PM

^^ yep. I noticed the nice little Documents To Go with the new O/S. I did a search and apparently there is more options available with the premium version? I take it this is a pay-for upgrade ...

The HTML email looks okay but I still find empower pro much much better.

John Clark 07-17-2008 12:09 PM

You can get more options just by upgrading the Standard Version to the new version of the Standard Version. There are options for this in Docs To Go.

I have not actually. But then I don't even use up the 300 minutes I have on my T-Mobile plan each month since I hardly use my phone to actually talk to someone. It's all email, IM, and web surfing. :)

So far I am pushing one hour for my upgrade. It has been at a white screen with hourglass for almost 20 minute. The DM progress bar is actually moving. The wait is killing me!
