Cases Cases Cases

What case (if any) are you using for your Torch?

JEEPers 08-13-2010 12:40 PM

Old 9700 case works. I think CrackBerry guys say the 8300 cases should work too. It doesn't put the Torch into standby correctly due to the magnet location.

gtivr6r 08-13-2010 12:40 PM

My old Bold 9000 case. (y)

Joshiyama 08-13-2010 01:06 PM

Bold 9700 Case fits like it was made for it! Except you dont have access to the USB/Charging port when it is in the case.

The 8900 and 8520 cases work to a liilte snug but works.

andriver 08-13-2010 03:25 PM

Otter case bought at AT&T.

Melven 08-13-2010 03:47 PM

Bold 9000 case - magnet even turns off screen.

how snug is the fit can you post a picture?

hmong 08-14-2010 02:56 AM

My bold 9700 case fits perfectly. HOWEVER, does anyone else experience the phone being "unlocked automatically" in this case, my phone unlock itself and starts dialing random #'s from phone book after staying in this case for a while...

Fit is not "snug".

The Torch is slightly shorter and narrower (width) than the Bold 9000.

The Torch is also slightly thicker than the Bold 9000.

Biggest difference is the width. So its a bit loose side to side on the Bold 9000 case.

So fit is not "snug" but there is no way it will fall out either.

Hope this helps.

pilot1 08-14-2010 01:55 PM

I bought the OtterBox and am using the Bold 9000 case to carry it. It is tight, but will loosen up a bit.

mdkappy 08-14-2010 04:46 PM

Bought the AGF Premium Leather case at the AT&T store. It fits snugly. Not sure whether to put it in the case screen out or in. Sometimes it presses on the screen because when I pull the phone out, the "connections" screen is open. It seems to work fine, though. FYI, on Crackberry.com they have mini to micro adapters for $9.95 so we can all keep our old chargers.

Oddly enough, new USB to Micro cable are also $9.95.

I noticed a similar behavior with mine but it does not dial any thing. Just doesn't always lock.

Would anyone recommend a case made specifically for the Torch? I can't seem to find one of those.

sean76 08-14-2010 11:48 PM

Using the Vzw 9650 Bold case...Fits perfect, like it was made for it.

JSY 08-15-2010 12:53 AM

I am also using my Bold 9000 case as the magnet will put the phone to sleep if the screen is facing the back. I have an Incipid feather ultra thin "case" on the Torch which adds about maybe 3mm to the width. I think it fits pretty well. Not snug, but not that much play either.

r0zzie 08-15-2010 01:23 AM

I bought the AGF GRT shell for the phone. I tend to like soft cases but none out yet and I can't imagine how they'd make one that will work with the sliding function of the phone. I don't like how the case makes the phone bigger than it actually is, but it'll do for now.

pyro451 08-15-2010 07:38 AM

Sena 9700 Case?

Can anyone confirm if the Sena ultraslim case for the 9700 will fit the 9800 and activate the sleep function?

Thanks!

I think the AGF Premium leather case is nothing more than a hastily repackaged BB 8800 case. I went and looked at it and noted it had no specific branding on the package, not AT&T and not "9800." Then when I tried my Torch in the case, I noticed the case was about 1/4 to 1/2 taller than the Torch. Coincidentally, that's exactly how much taller my BB 8800 is over my Torch.

JEEPers 08-15-2010 11:34 PM

Probably going with a clear shield type protection if they don't come out with any TPU cases anytime soon.

hmong 08-15-2010 11:49 PM

From some of the other posts on the thread, the issue of "automatic unlock" once it's placed into a holster (in either BOLD or TOUR) might not be a holster incompetible issue, it could be the sensitive of the lock/unlock buttom needs to be adjusted by an software update.

Until someone makes a perfect fit holster, I don't think the problem can be fixed right now. For now, my Torch is out of a case just with a Zagg screen protector.

cvelez 08-18-2010 09:46 AM

Got the Otter box and I love it, really well made and that internal rubber protects it from shocks, you do have to get a screen protector thou because it doesn't have that. A bonus of this case is that it makes the key lock button sort of recessed which ends the problems with it getting pushed in your pocket.

knottyrope 08-18-2010 10:02 AM

I use the 9700 factory holster that was a bit worn from my old 9700. It works well for me.

i tried a 9000 factory holster and the magnet fails when screen it on outside. it need to be raised up about half inch to work. when placing scrren inside it works when magnet on flap is closed.

YMMV

jcp007 08-20-2010 06:32 PM

RIM OEM leather holsters are coming soon. Go to the NA site and register for email update. The most recent update that I have heard is mid-September. Until then, I am using my 9700 cases for which the magnets do not line up, I know.

Unluky 08-21-2010 04:22 PM

I am using my old 8310 belt holster case and it fits like a glove and the magnet works just fine with the screen pointed it, which I do anyway.

netPOSER 08-23-2010 10:28 AM

Do folks think case = holster?

When someone says "case" to me I'm thinking of something rubber or plastic that stays on the device. You put it on once and leave it on and the device can be used without removing the case.

Whereas a holster is something you place the device in when not using it. Like holster with a belt clip. That's why you can use the older holsters with the 9800.

But there are "cases" that force you to remove the device when you have to use it. Like the leather case that came with the 8300. Really it's a leather pouch.

Just my 2 cents...

Th3w01f 08-23-2010 09:31 PM

Got the otter box tonight and it seems pretty good (it's the black and pink but I can blame that on my daughter). Amazon has the Splash Masque screen protectors (3-pack) for $11 with free shipping. They have good reviews for the iPod but not sure about the Torch.

Glad to hear and confirm that my brand new spare works PERFECTLY

For the charging issue, duh, flip it upside down lolol.

The magnetic strip still puts in stand by and resumes when it taken out. I've only tested this sitting at the computer, with the charger plugged in with the top of the phone put into the holster.

As the case breaks in, I'm sure it will start to fit a lot more loosely. I'm wondering if padding could be added maybe? I've always LOVED the 9000 case- I've got through 3 of them with just my 9000 alone :D

ok... that's a bunch of BS !!!!! The otterbox website clearly states "comes with a screen protector".

When I purchased my commuter series from AT&T and got home... no protector screen. I was pissed... lot of time spent traveling back n' forth. Called back and spoke to the guy who sold me the phone. "I'm sorry sir, it doesn't come with it".... OH REALLY????

... road trip... back I went. Walked in the door and before I could go into dick mode, the sales rep said "sir, spoke to my manager and he said to give you two free screen protectors (I bought two cases)"...

Good manager !! Long story short...AT&T is stealing from the customers. Otterbox sends them out with a screen protector and AT&T is taking it out, putting it in their own packaging and charging the customer additional funds if they want what they've technically already paid for !!!!

....jerks

nathan62969 09-23-2010 09:59 PM

I too would like to know any reviews of cases such as "rubberized plastic cases" or "silicone cases?"

Might just end up getting the Otterbox ... but am hoping for something slimmer.

Particularly am looking for:

Cover possibly without blocking buttons but at the same time with coverage close by so that buttons (like the lock button) aren't pressed so easy, like in pocket.

A feel that is not slippery nor clammy.

The front case (for the slider) that is on sturdy -- won't chip off easy.

Anyone have experience with cases (FOR THE TORCH) by, for example?

Beyond
Generic
Accessory One
KarenDeals
Lux
iNcido

By the way, I bought the Amzer Luxe Soft Gel Skin Case for Torch -- am returning mine as the buttons are covered AND the places to press on the case to effect the buttons are so stiff that the buttons are not effected at all.

nathan62969 10-02-2010 10:10 AM

FYI

So I bought the rubberized protector case made by a company called Beyond via Amazon -- not 100% perfect (occasionally the front piece will pop off when pulling from pocket, and the back part is not the easiest to take off) but generally am happy with it. Hopefully it will last (bought for $8.99).

Otter Box was no good for me.

I bought the otter box case, kept it for a few days but then my three year old got to my phone and the slide cover came off...He did not break it but it just made the poor kid break down in a fit...When I explained to him that the phone was OK he said "this no good daddy'. Needless to say I took it back and got the AGF GRT shell for the phone. To my satisfaction, I found that the slide cover actually slide into the bottom cover and was not clipping on the phone. Very nice case and the rep also gave me the none glossy screen protector when I told him the story of my son....I would recommend it...Does increase the girth of the phone but its the best that I have found thus far....Also came with two covers, one blue and the other looks just like the phone's orignal color.
Ohhh! got it from the ATT store....

herbster983 10-03-2010 03:07 PM

I've been using the 9700 case for a few days but having unlock/random clicking issues, so I just ordered the OEM RIM case off of eBay - BlackBerry Torch 9800 OEM Leather Case Pouch Holster - eBay (item 310256393362 end time Oct-29-10 07:04:42 PDT) - $17 vs $40+ at shopblackberry.com

puts it to sleep and makes all of the "in holster" setting work perfect!!!

im heading to ebay to get me a brand new one

The OEM case I just received is pretty daymn nice! red stitching and leather. ooo wee!

snowmangoh 10-05-2010 10:45 AM

I had an otterbox case and returned it... the poor thing is naked for now. Every case I tried on it seemed to mess with my screen lock button. Has anyone else had this problem?

Jdjeff 10-05-2010 12:03 PM

Nope, my Otterbox is great and it just saved my bacon. I accidentally dropped by 9800 (in the case) from the top bleacher at a baseball game onto the concrete floor. I saw it fall, fall, fall, faaaaallll, fall and then bounce on the corner and when I eventually retrieved it, not only was everything working but the case wasn't even scuffed.

ejmm22 10-06-2010 03:29 AM

I bought the otterbox initially but the part that goes on the sliding part of the phone broke after a week, went back to the at&t store and they said that was happening a lot and i got a 2-part case again but this one, the part that goes on the sliding part of the phone clicks on 2 rails coming out of the other part.
Very nice feel and it doesn't come off at all. Much better than the otterbox

Who made the new case that you got? I am waiting for the otterbox as I had one on my Tour and it was great. Does the commuter case come with a belt holster? I can't seem to find one in the pictures..

ejmm22 10-06-2010 07:26 PM

The package has the AT&T logo and it is called AGF GRT SHELL, their oracle code is 75981, with it they should be able to show it to you, it is a better fit than the otterbox and $5 cheaper
This one has no belt holster.

I see this available now.

So, the top piece attaches to a rail as part of the bottom piece, correct?

How durable do you think this case is? Do you think after a fall that the rail or top part that attaches to the rail will get broken? What's the material like -- super sturdy?

I don't know if it will broke and when but the otterbox I had broke in my pocket. The cover of the sliding part attaches to it by a little plastic tab only so I went with this one instead.

....and, as I noted earlier in this thread, I bought Dark Purple Rubberized Protector Case for BlackBerry Torch 9800 by Beyond -- would have appeared to be a good buy, but aside from the top part occasionlly coming off, after just over a week, the top part where it attaches to the slider broke at two spots -- cheap plastic -- making it no longer attachable. Not recommended, even for $8.55 via amazon.com.

endure161 10-11-2010 07:16 AM

After waiting too long to get it I am very unhappy with the Otterbox. Even with a lot of fiddling with it, the phone acts screwy and locks up so that I have to do a battery pull. After several attempts (really wanted this to work) I gave up on it. Guess I will try something else....

The Seidio Innocase does look good! Question: the top part, the part that clips onto the slider screen, is it a sturdy clipon that does not come off easily, and are the clips themselves pretty solid, hard-to-break? Do you think it will last a long time, even after the rare fall to the ground? Hope so!

After looking at the Otterbox sitting on my desk for a few days I decided to make one last attempt before throwing it in the trash. Using scissors I cut the rubber on each side of the top buttons - that made them into flaps hinged on the back. A little more trimming on the rubber at the top and the interference with the buttons was gone. Now my Torch functions correctly in the Otterbox. Guess I will keep until I see another case that works better. Now I wish I had some kind of holster for it so it doesn't stay loose in my pocket...

I agree I use innocase combo and its great! Sometimes I use it without the holster and put it in my pocket. It helps prevent me from unlocking my phone while its in my pocket. Otterbox broke within 7 days without even dropping it.

A followup on this. My Torch is working quite well in the Otterbox Commuter case after doing the trimming of the rubber that I described above. The trick is to trim enough to avoid the rubber "buttons" binding and keeping pressure on the BB's lock button. Mine would occasionally bind and cause the phone to stay locked and act screwy. A bit more trimming to be sure that the rubber flap can spring back without binding and the Torch works great in the case. Now if I just had a good holster that fits...

lrdiaz 10-29-2010 05:56 PM

Crackberry online store has a BB Torch case. Just got mine, along with the dock station.

ejmm22 10-29-2010 08:35 PM

The thing with the cases for the torch is how do you attach the case to the sliding part of the phone.
i saw many cases but the only one that had a rail so the sliding part attaches itself to the fixed part.
I did not see the Seidio Innocase for the torch but if it has the rail i'd switch tomorrow.

I had, one of those snap on cases like the seido and it just broke on the slider part. I have the dock craddle so I have to take both parts of the case off everytime I want to charge or sync because it wont fit with the case on. So annoying...I think I have no real alternative to protecting the phone because there isn't a well made case that I can use and I hate to keep buying crap cases that will just break. There isnt much holding onto the phone and wears out and breaks quick.

Anybody have the same issues, suggestions or solutions??????
What is everyone using and with what charging methods?

As noted above I've had similar issues, I think, but have been getting by with the bottom of a Beyond-made case and the top of a Amzer Luxe Soft Gel Skin Case, where the other parts of eac failed. Just charging by cable... And also too still looking forward to a case ideal for the Torch..,

Just got word my custom fortte case has shipped.. Went for a few extras so it was made special. From the pics on their site it seems to grab onto the bottom part so you can still slide the lcd touchscreen up after flipping the case open.

We'll see how secure it holds, and how convenient it will be with daily use but I've had great success with their cases and my 8700 so its worth a go for sure.
