Hey, report back the updates?

A freaking amazing! New feature called my location uses gps or radio tower triangulation!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy cow! No voice or turn by turn, but I think the directions will pop up as you move along with gps. This is huge |
radio tower you say? Nice feature for VZW customers and those without internal GPS
|
Is this on the GMM site?
|
I can't get it to even come up on my 8310. I'm doing a battery pull now to see what happens.
|
I got it on my 8830, BB was lagging a little bit after I installed it but its loaded now.. look pretty neat, will mess with it more later when I have better reception..
|
Laggings not the word I'm thinking. As soon as I click on Google Maps, I can't do ANYTHING else on it.
|
Kewl! Loaded on my 8310, which has GPS. But it nailed my location with the radio towers, *inside* my office building. Even shows you a coverage circle.

Here's what it looks like:
|
just loaded it on my 8820... Works great....the find my location feature seems almost instantaneous now
|

Do you have your internal GPS enabled? If so, you shouldn't be seeing that light blue outer circle. |
Everyone's 8310 that installed it here turned into a brick when they tried to run it. Nothing responded at all and the only way to fix it was to pull the battery. Everyones removing it now and I'm pushing out the older version.
|
This is pretty cool. I have my GPS enabled on my 8820, but can never get a signal in my office building. The cell tower approximation nailed my location. It'll be interesting to see how it transitions when I go outside and pick up a real GPS signal.
|
Works fine on my 8310, much quicker.
|
I've got 10 of them sitting on my desk now that users brought to me asking why their BB's are frozen until they pull the battery now after loading it. Another 10 remote users have all emailed me asking the same thing. I have 1 of them that's been sitting on my desk waiting for the app to even come up after clicking on it almost an hour ago.
|
This version (2.0.0) is working great on my 8820 inside the building I work at.
|
Just updated to GM 2.0 on my 8703e (OS 4.2.1) on VZW. Comes up with my approx. location - WOW!!!!
|
Where did you get it?
Ddd download |
www.google.com.gmm is the download page.

Downloaded fine in my Sprint 8830. Found me inside my building - very cool!
|
This is awesome for us VZW users w/o VZNav. Just did a search for Starbucks and it showed the closest one a few blocks away!!!
|
They don't have the .zip file up for the BESAdmin's to download it, does someone have the files they can zip up so I can try to push it out to mine from the BES? I can't even download it from by BB anymore.
|
Thanks. Just downloaded it. It's awesome!
|
Entirely new search results system too.
|
Liking it so far.
|
I am in a bldg with poor reception and it pinpointed me within 500 ft.

And it seems like many of the issues with the 1.6.x builds are gone - Calling persmissions and other bugs.
|
Holy Cow! It posted my location when in my home as just down the street from me about 1/8th mile away. Here's the kicker. I don't have radio tower signal here at the house. I am UMA only. In fact, EDGE/GSM drops right about where it has my approximate location tagged... That's amazing; it must grab some kind of cache of where the last known radio spot was!
p.s. I'm on a 8320 with TMO (no GPS) and I didn't wipe older version of Google Maps. Just installed the new and check OK for http connections for Googles Maps.... |
Does anyone have the alx files since I can't seem to get them off the site? I have people screaming at me because it's not working for them. I just talked to another admin at the suite next to us and he said they are having the same issues also.
|
I am really, REALLY, loving the updates for this application! Google Maps was great (IMO) before this upgrade, but WOW!!
The searching and updating the maps (zooming in/out, pan) is faster, too! Excellent job, Google! |
No issues here with it on my 8310/AT&T.
Works good all except placing me about 1/4 mile from where I am. :? |

ok this is screwed up, after trying at least a dozen times, it finally loaded on my 8310 and 2 more. But the rest is still timing out. I wish they would post the zip files at Google Maps so I can push it out from the BES.
|
Quote:
Now it's showing me a few miles in the other direction, on a highway. |
Works with my AT&T 8100.
Inside the office building, is show it is with 1400 meters. With the satellite view, it shows my location as the parking ramp next to the building I'm in. I can see the parking lot out the window. |
That sound you hear is all the VZW people fainting now.

For VZW users, does the phone gps setting make a diff.?
|
I set my boss's 8830 to Location On and I swear he was ready to start doing cart wheels when he saw it load and it nailed his location to 200 meters.

<-- Happy VZW user :)
Working perfectly on my 8130 |
Take That Verzion!!!!!!!!!
|
very nice! love the traffic feature!
|
So much for Verizon's pathetic crippling excuses. It's all about the money. Looks like they can take their navigator and shove......

Please, this thread is about Google Maps. |
The new program works well. I am inside a building with very low signal and it is less than a quarter mile off. Not as accurate as the internal disabled GPS, but it is still a lot better than what we had before.
FYI, I did not have any freezing issues. |
ive got an 8100 on t-mo..just dl'd v2.0!! wow!! much better than the previous versions..no issues at all! well, it didnt keep my old favorites, but its no big deal..only had a few..but the gps recognized my location instantly..great job google!!
|
This really is a tremendous breakthrough for cell phone users!

I can easily switch from gps to triangulation and back. So far so good.
|
THIS IS SO COOL.. I really like the "My Location"-GPS. nice !!

(1) Now you can scroll your trackball to the right to go straight into edit mode when you highlight a direction field,NICE!!! (2) It's definitely faster when zooming ( i thought EDGE network upgraded ), lol. (3) The menu icon it's now animated ( the arrow moves ). (4) Can set it to always enable bluetooth when program initializes. (5) Next and previous direction keys are now 4 and 6 ( not a big deal from 1 and 3 ). (6) Press the "#" sign to toggle between " map view " and " List view ". (7) I think now the new version 2.0 supports transparent menu windows created on any themes, before the transparent windows would disappear leaving visible the solid color window. This is a very nice observation from the google team, KUDOS! (8) Loving the my lotion feature. P.S. I just wish now that the next version would atleast include a " REVERSE DIRECTIONS " feature. Other than that the new version will be a big hit along with the new google updater which gave me the update. I always believed in you google, you guys are the #@!%. |
Nice "My Location" feature. Works great on my 8100.
In the old version (1.6.something), I used to toggle the traffic view on/off using the # key. This no longer works. Documentation for 2.0.0 states that traffic can be toggled on/off using the 7 key, but this key pans to the left. I've tried every key on the keyboard, and nothing toggles traffic on/off. Is this a bug? I really liked the one button toggle on/off for traffic. (n) |

I had the freezing issue as well the first time I tried to load it, but after a battery pull, it's been working great!

Wirelessly posted (8700g: BlackBerry8700/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)
Installed ok on my 8700g..... Only irritation is the Enable Bluetooth? Prompt keeps coming back when I have clicked no. But otherwise, pretty cool. |
Anybody seeing major battery drain with this? Seems like my battery went down quick after I installed, but could be coincidental. I'll do a full reset just in case...
|
8310 on rogers in BC. works great. too funny though... position with cell towers it tells me it is accurate within 1.2km. hilarious.
|
It has me 800 meters off and thats when I'm outside. I did a battery pull and refreshed the GPS. Then launched it and still 800 meters off. Tried the location menu and that didn't help any.

For example, here's the link to an older version for the 8700: http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v1.6....00_v4_1_L1.jad Messing around with the URL should get you the link for your desired version and device. |

Anyway to keep the screen on? I know it will drain the batter faster but it would be a nice option to have like in telenav and bbmaps

I removed it off my 8310. I stood outside while I was on a smoke break and it never got closer then 800 meters. I tried the location menu and still didn't get any closer so I don't see it bumping from the cell towers to the internal GPS. Maybe I'll try it later this week but too many other issues going on today to mess with this.

Heh.. it sounds like Google aced Microsoft again... reference this thread about Windows Live Search working on an 8703e in the LA area. But it sounds the new Google maps is working with Verizon devices everwhere.
http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...8703e-gps.html Sorry, I had to say that. I'm going to try this but should I remove the old Google maps first? Or does it matter? |
My Google Maps is screwing with my moto s9's.
I am listening to Tenacious D Pick of destiny, decided to pop open Google Maps. My headset would disconnect, connect, disconnect, in a loop. Quit google maps and all is well again. Face your inner demons my son and ROCK!!!!! |
Quote:
i installed it directly over the previous 1.6 version. It will ask if you want to overwrite..which i did..still no issues at all.. and yes..tower triangulation works..locates you immediately once you are connected... |
I have 8700g 4.2.x OS on TMobile. I installed the new version of google maps but the "My Location" does not work.
|
I think it's just too buggy to use right now, I just pushed out the link http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v1.6....00_v4_2_L1.jad to everyone over the BES until I see more people without issues running it. So far a LOT of curve users are having issues and that's what we primarily use here are 8310's. Locations are just too far off to be useful.
|
Thats because you are inside so they will be far off. it will use satellites outdoors.
|
This is excellent. Gmaps found it's way back up to the main screen of my 8130.
|
I loaded on my 8320 and, without my BT GPS, it gives my location to "within 5000 meters." It's got me located about 2-3 miles from my location. When I drove around town it stayed in the same location then would bump 2-3 miles to another spot. Doesn't look like it comes anywhere close to doing as well as a GPS but it's neat. It will make searches easier as, at least, it will show you in the right town.
However, the rest of the app has been working smooth. The only gripe I have is the Bluetooth nagging prompt if your bluetooth is turned off. Every 5 seconds is a bit much. Also, I noticed hitting the "Esc" key does NOT close the app anymore. You have to do Menu >Exit. If you hit escape to go do something else the app continues to run and you will very likely hit your battery pretty hard. |

Audit,
Are you picking up satelite info? If you go to Options >Advanced Options >GPS do you have lat/long info there? As soon as I connected my BT GPS the location jumped right to my exact location. It should do the same with the internal GPS. |
OK, am I missing something?
In the Help menu, under "Pan Around", does it not say that the 7 key pans left? And then, under "Highway Traffic", does it not say that the 7 key requests traffic? So which is it, Google? My 7 key pans left. What does your 7 key do? This has to be a mistake, right? |
JC,
yes I'm getting satellite info just fine, my GPS is working great and Telenav is working great also. I've been playing with this thing all damn day and it's only hit my exact location within 10 meters 1 time and then I had to reboot my BB after removing another app that I wasn't using and since then it's back to 800 meters only. |
just installed OTA on my 8130 on Verizon's network, no problems.
location was a bit off, but otherwise fine. |
Ok, I installed it with no problems, but it has My Location about 8.5 miles off! :? The screen says "approximate location within 5000 meters", which is a little over 3 miles. Surely they can do better than that!!
|

I'm not too impressed with the triangulation but it does narrow down when I turn on GPS. |
I'd kill for the Zip of this install to have on the BES. Googles site is so damn slow that I can't try it with the 8800's
Does anyone have a copy of the 1.6.4 BES files? The best I had on the server was 1.6.2 |
Quote:
I might try to push back to the 1.6.4. Anyone has the 1.6.4 for 8700g 4.2.x OS? |
8700c and when I hit 'z' the traffic pops up. They've also changed the directions, 3 used to move me up a step, but now it's 6.
As for the triangulation, it's working pretty good for me. It says within 1700 meters and it's only off by a couple of hunded feet. Not bad!! I'm definately liking it!! |

All of these are personal 8310's that people have purchased. Our company doesn't supply regular users with BB's. Even the Exec's are having issues with theirs. Each one was purchased at different times, different stores, etc.
Any 8310 has issues with it not using the built in GPS, mine used it 1 time and that was it. I'm the only one that's in the office now and everyone else is out driving to or from clients or on their way home, when I asked everyone over BBM, they all have said that non of them have zero'd in on them yet. The people I'm asking are not the average user either. I've personally trained each one and they know what they are doing before they call me with a issue. |
