Best Canadian Plan?

Hey guys, I know you guys know your stuff so I'd figure I'd come here to ask a couple questions.

What are the best plans you fellow Canadians know are in existence? I'm a student who's looking to spend as little as possible.

Also how many GB do you think is necessary to have in your plan?

What is the difference between a government plan and a personal plan?

Thank you in advance!

If you're in Canada with Wind Mobile or Mobilicity coverage, you should be able pick up the an unlimited calling, unlimited BIS data plan for $45/month.

In UK, at least with T-Mob, BIS cost £5 and is unlimited. I had a great deal on my contract, £45 p/m with unlimited browsing and £235 of credit (0.1 p/m for calls and messages)

Edit: I understand you asked about Canada but I've always being curious about mobile contracts around the world. BTW im tied on a 18 month contract.

You should decide which carrier is best for you before you try to pick a plan. Find the carrier that has the best service when and where you need it, where you live, work, study, travel and play.

What good is a cheap plan if you have no service?

Virgin Mobile is the only carrier in Canada that gives you both BIS and BES on the same plan. Carriers like Bell, Rogers and Telus have two separate plan packages for BIS and BES; users have to pay more for BES.

Virgin Mobile uses Bell's network.

The Wind plans are great for the city dwellers who rarely leave the city --
but I should mention that the best Canadian plans, for large data consumers, who also want to tether are usually the Rogers $30 for 6 gigabytes, promo-only plans. (Or the Bell equivalent, though you have to use third-party tethering software with that for tethering to work)

These plans generally come out only once a year around the time of major iPhone releases (and generally become available for BlackBerry users too), and give you wider coverage than WIND, especially if you want to consume data in more rural areas, at the campground, or at cottage.

The $30/6Gb plan is regularly offered by Telus retentions department (for existing customers).
