Adding BES 10 to a BES 5.0.4 Environment (Configuration DB)

I have BES 5.0.4 installed and running the latest patches. No issues at all.

On a separate W2K8 R2 server, I've installed BES 10 (Blackberry Device Service/BDS) and the Studio.

Both BES 10 and BES 5.0.4 are installed on VMware, so I can quickly go back to where I was.

My only question is - when installing BDS, do I want to use the existing Configuration Database of BES 5.0.4 on the BES 10 - or do I want to create a brand new Configuration Database on the BES 10?

I'm confused a bit, and this is the only part that I can't deceiver via the documentation.

When I created a new Configuration Database my existing BlackBerries (like Bold 9900) stopped sending and receiving. Its like the new BES 10 conflicted with BES 5.0.4. So I stopped (powered down) the BES 10 and reverted BES 5.0.4 back to the way it was before I started. Everything is back to normal. I want to give this another go today, but I'm confused on this Configuration Database. I'm thinking that is how BES 5.0.4. and BES 10 talk to each other.

Thanks

Well, I guess if you try it enough times - you will eventually get it.

You should *not* use the same Configuration Database as the BES 5.0.4. It should be brand new.

I'm off and to the races!

Re: Adding BES 10 to a BES 5.0.4 Environment (Configuration DB)

Page 21 of the "Blackberry_device_service_6-1.2_Installatiotn_and_Configuation_Guide_en.pdf:
Unsupported Environments:
"You cannot connect the BlackBerry Device Service and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express to the same BlackBerry Configuration Database. To run the BlackBerry Device Service and the BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express in the same organization, you can configure one BlackBerry Configuration Database for the BlackBerry Device Service instances, and another BlackBerry Configuration Database for the BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances or BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express instances."

Long text, but this is, what RIM_Next_Door also told.

However, you wrote, you made a new configuration database, separate from the BES5. If after installation of the BES10 Service the BES5 stopped working it is unlikely, that the problem was with the database.
The only thing, I can think of is, you used the SRP of the BES5 for the installation of the BES10 (which is very unsupported I guess). If this was the case, use the SRP that came with the BES 10 server.

The BES5 and the BES10 are working completely independent from another. There is no communication channel between them. You are able to manage a user with the Managment Studio which communicates with BES5,BES10, and the universal device service.

To be clear, as I want to do this as well, were you able to use the same SRP for both servers while making the change? I want to do a phased upgrade to eventually move all of my users to the new machine and eventually retire the older version.
Thanks, DB.
