Onyx Release Date - Any News?
The most recent rumors suggest a Nov/Dec 2009 release. Have there been any developments to suggest whether the Onyx is still on track?

I'm thinking March, just a guess but I doubt it to be out at xmas, would be a smart thing if they did though. |

Who's the carrier? |
Unless Rim are going to surprise us with another new device, you have to think this one is in the role of the Bold this year, going to multiple gsm carriers and shipping in volume before the holiday period, unless storm2 is aiming to do that and you would hope that they wouldn't be so arrogant as to assume all their customers want a touchscreen when physical keyboards are so much better for messaging.

I have not been following RIM's product development for long so I am far from an expert on their release dates. But since there are test devices out there and at least one review, I would think that the Onyx release would be in the next couple months. Makes no sense to get some buzz going with test devices and then wait 9 months.

Onyx (9700) is rumored to be the next Bold. 3G. QWERTY keyboard. 3.2 MP camera. Improved browser. More memory and faster processor. I am hoping for a trackpad. I would rather have AT&T release a good BB rather than rush one out that is not ready. I would be okay with a 2010 Q1 release.

I would think given the fact that the Storm 2 is going to roll out almost the same time as the regular Storm did last year, I would imagine that the Onyx would come out the same time as the BOLD did as well. We'll know when they acknowledge it and give a press release about it, but till then, who knows when it'll be out for sure...

Given what fact?
All rumors and guesses. |

I hope the Storm2 comes out before Christmas, I am really looking forward to dropping my BOLD for it. I am not big on the compact tiny screen device these days and even thought about geting the Storm but will wait a bit to see what happens with the S2. :)

From what I hear from some of those who are field testing, the typical time span after a phone goes into field testing is 2-3 months to release, so if the Onyx is now in the field testing phase on AT&T (which it now is), that would logically put it for an October/November release.
Just my guess from what I'm reading. The Bold was kind of an exception, AT&T was having numerous problems w/ not only their network last summer after the iPhone madness, but they weren't happy with the OS the Bold was running and pushed field testing out a heck of a lot further than what they normally do. |
Recent rumors from BGR are for a Black Friday release of the Bold 9700 (Onyx)
|
wow, that sounds really exiting, I cant wait! :)

Bold 9700 (Onyx) is popping up on Vodaphone and Rogers. The question remains whether AT&T is on track to release the device later this year especially in light of the hiccup with the OS .297 release and its "network enhancements". AT&T should spend more time testing and make sure that the OS 5.0 is compatible with their 3G network thereby releasing a better product and keeping 15+ year customers like me coming back if the cause was the OS/network issue. I can't really comment on the issues with OS .297 since I have had no problems with this build.

Bell is also rumoured to get it once they get their HSPA network online. Can't wait.

As long as it's out by March for t-mobile which is when I can get an upgrade cheap I don't care LOL t-mobile's scheduled to get 3G here 4Q of this year so any time after then is good by me.
|
It will be out by Black Friday and I base this off of no information whatsoever. As penguin would say, we will get a release date when a carrier announces it.

According to the latest rumors, technical acceptance by AT&T is 10/12/2009. It should be out soon. From the most recent prototype YouTube postings, the build and device look pretty close to the version that will be evenntuallly released.
