Maximum video length /size on z10

Hi, I have a Z10 with a SanDisk Ultra Class 10 64gb SD card, formatted correctly (FAT32 I believe) so the card size is recognised and I can save video directly to it. I have also changed the settings so the file is saved directly to SD card rather than internal memory.

I can record and save videos in 1080p no problem, but only short videos. The video stops recording after a certain amount of time. It displays an error along the lines of "video cannot be recorded" and the entire file is lost. Im not sure at what point exactly this happens but think around the 30 minute mark.

I believe at 1080p the file size generated is about 6-8GB per hour, so in theory i should be good for several hours recording. What is the problem and anyone know how to fix it?

Many thanks in advance for any replies

The correct format is exFAT. You will need OS version 10.2.1.3175 and above to use exFAT. Supported MicroSD media card storage sizes for use with BlackBerry smartphones

FAT32 will work but with the limitations of FAT32.

See https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ExFAT That will answer your questions about exFAT. If you are stuck using FAT32 then look up FAT32.

A new card should already be formatted. When you insert the 64GB card in a device that supports exFAT you'll see an error momentarily and then a message that the device is downloading drivers. It all happens in a few seconds.

Re: Maximum video length /size on z10

Thanks for reply. I have since updated the OS, now on the latest version. I formatted the SD card to FAT32 as i had read as it is 64GB, the Z10 will not recognise 64gb unless it is this format. (now know this is incorrect)

Since updating, the problem is in part solved. I no longer get the error message, but the maximum file size using FAT32 is 4GB, limiting 1080p video to 40 mins or so. To get round this i have tried a different 32gb SD card formatted to exFAT. This card is recognised by the Z10, but it will not let me record video directly to it, only to the internal memory. The internal memory is only 16gb which is insufficient for my requirements.

Any ideas why i can't record direct to this SD card?

It is sandisk, class 10 32gb.

Thanks

Edit: just checked out your link. Im using OS 10.3.2.2474, so i should be able to use the 64gb card on exFAT? I just reformatted 64gb card to exFAT, recognised by the phone, but can't record directly to it...

Seems to be fixed! Took battery and sd out, restart then insert sd after everything settled. Then open camera app and wait for it to ask if you want to use the sd card, rather than open the camera settings.

Got there in the end!

If card is still FAT32 you may need to put it in a computer and format it as exFAT, then put it back in the Z10. And the Z10 may still need to download the drivers.

You can try formatting the card in the device. If it works it should format it as exFAT. If not, then format as exFAT using computer.
