How do I find carrier assigned network IP address?

I'm trying to figure out how to find the Internal IP address that my carrier assigns to the device.

When I use a tool like What Is My IP Address? - IP Address Lookup, Info, Speed Test, and more it shows the IP address of the BIS proxy server or the Opera proxy server depending on if I use Opera or the Blackberry browser but what I'm looking for is the Internal IP address that Telus is assigning to the device inside of their firewall.

Thought I saw it once. I tried ALT+EACE but this doesn't show the IP address but what I remember looked similar to that screen. Something similar to that routine brought it up.

The IP address that Telus assigns to device are non routable IP's in the format of 10.xxx.xxx.xxx. When you are using an applicaiton that makes a direct TCPIP socket connection instead of passing through the BIS proxy it goes out through the telus NAT firewall and gets an IP address like 72.25.192.4 (Example of an actual Telus NAT firewall IP)

I checked the FAQ, did a few searches on google and the forum search feature but I could not find it. Surprisingly none of the "blackberry secrets" type threads/sites turned up anything.

I didn't even think a bb had an assigned ip address. I thought the carrier identified by esn or sim chip.

What would you do with the IP address if you could find it?

Trying to troubleshoot a periodic network issue on Telus.

From time to time applications which make a direct TCPIP connection fail to work. Disabling the radio for a minute and then reconnecting will result in you getting a new IP address and can get things working again. It seems like there is a bad NAT server in the pool somewhere. All the built in apps run through the BIS proxy server and they don't have problems connecting.

Because Telus only supports the built in apps and only third party apps do a direct TCPIP connection they don't look into it further than your basic tier 1 phone rep. Most of the time it works but when it fails I would like to be able to check the internal IP address they assigned and see if there is some pattern to the internal IP range when it is working or not.

I remember coming across a post about dialling something like *#some numbers# + send and a diagnostic screen comes up with a bunch of info including the network ip address.

I am not sure if it can ever be looked up but I'm interested...

So clearly you're talking about when you're using wifi, no?

ricpac 05-21-2008 07:19 AM

No, not when on Wi-Fi. That'd be too easy.

Then I'm thinking there isn't an IP address at all, since it's not using TCP/IP while on the carrier's wireless network, be it GSM or CDMA.

ricpac 05-21-2008 07:25 AM

That ^^ makes sense but I'm curious to know where the OP is headed.

kjjb0204 05-21-2008 08:43 AM

Just to expand, an IP address would only be issued when using TCP/IP on wifi, and in that case would not be issued by the carrier, but by the local wireless router/ap. If it's a home router, once connected on wifi, just log in to the router from a connected pc and check attached devices. That would show you the ip address assigned to the bb.

jonberry 05-21-2008 08:52 AM

May I ask what model BB and OS version the OP is using? 7130e?

Teksu 05-21-2008 03:53 PM

Post removed, didnt read though the whole first post...

Ok, I finally found it.

Dial #4357* hit send.

Scroll down the list of options and you will find the IP address listed.
For example mine is 10.50.167.20 right now.

Tried it on a GSM phone but it didn't do it. Maybe someone on a CDMA phone can confirm this. Or is this model-specific?

It's for CDMA phones, but the model doesn't matter.

Your ip address is a private IP address, meaning it's a fake ip sent by your local dhcp server and you will not be able to have any ip conversations with outside stations.

Telus runs a NAT firewall. Exactly the same concept as you have on a home router that you may pick up from Linksys or Dlink. The router assigns the computers an internal network IP address and translates the network address and port of an outbound connection to a public IP address. The idea is that you can map a large number of internal IP addresses to a small number of public IP addresses to conserve network address space.

For example right now I restarted my phone and got a new IP:
10.89.47.109 which is translated to 72.25.192.4 for external connectivity. This combination is working. When one of the applications that makes a tcpip connection starts failing I will take note the internal network IP address.

The entire point of my post is that Telus is having a periodic network problem. I suspect that one of their NAT firewalls is not working properly and I want to find out if there is a pattern based on the internal network number they assign. If for example I find that it always fails when the IP is in the range of 10.88.121.xxx then I might be able to get it looked at.

Interesting...

I tend to think you've got a software problem, but you never did say what model and OS version you've got.

I have an 8130 on Alltel. That number works here, (CDMA). My IP is 98.104.110.113, which is routable. It's not private.

Other users on Telus with different hardware and software versions get exactly the same problem. There are threads on HoFo telusmobility.howardforums.com and the Opera forum that discuss it.

Opera just released a silent update today that is supposed to allow it to fall back to using the BIS proxy.
Old version = 4.1.11320 20080514 (Check help in opera application for your version)
New version = 4.1.11355 20080522

Thread:
New "silent" release of Opera Mini 4.1 - Palm and BlackBerry - Opera Mini - Opera Community

For some reason updating opera resets your bookmarks so either use the sync feature or you will need to re-enter them.
