Curve 8520 would not let me install OS

Hi, guys. I have a seriously messed up 8520 on my hands. It all started when my Whatsapp wanted to update (It does that annoyingly often). After it finished and restarted my device, it would load me into a white screen. I tried removing the battery a few times, but it didn't help. So, I tried updating my OS with the loader using 8520wifiM_PBr5.0.0_rel1728_PL5.2.0.96_A5.0.0.1067. exe . I also tried the "repair" option on the Desktop Manager. I deleted vendor.xml from the AppLoader folder and the one in the appdata. Whatever I try, I always get to the same result- at the step "waiting for device initialization" it starts my phone on a white screen saying "Reload Software: 507". Then it starts reconnecting over and over and the usb connection sound keeps repeating. Eventually it just tells me the connection failed. I have no idea what to do. If there is any hope for this phone, please tell me. Thank you.

From what you describe it sounds like you are doing everything right. Make sure you are indeed installing an OS for your model. You must run the executable on your computer. Make sure you delete all instances of vendor.xml.

You might need to troubleshoot the desktop software and the connection to the device. Have you tried different USB ports, made sure the computer is not entering power saving mode, and so forth?

Thanks for your reply!
I tried finding the firmware from an official vendor with no success. Most links on the forum were dead, the one that works leads me to an AT&T page that requires me to provide information I do not have. I had to download the OS from a torrent site. I installed it, ran loader.exe, let it do its thing, and the above happens. I also tried adding blackberry.alx to the loader and it told me it was not compatible with my device...

I only found those two instances of vendor.xml. It says something in the pinned thread I'm completely lost on:
" For Vista and Win 7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there"
I have no idea what that is supposed to mean...

I'm on a desktop so it's not entering power saving mode. I tried changing the usb port. I doubt it's the cable because I use the same on my graphics tablet with no issues. And it's not just that the connection is bad. It works fine when my phone is turned off- it detects the connection and it stays that way. But as soon as it turns on and gets to the white error screen, it's over. Infinite reconnection...

You can install an OS from any carrier provide it is the correct version for your device, and provided you delete the vendor file. I don't know the OS installers and didn't look up the one you are trying to use. Maybe it is the wrong one, or maybe there is a problem with it.

You can install the OS just using the desktop software. The limitation is it will only install versions authorized by your carrier. Still, you may want to go this route just to get up and running. It may not matter.

Re: Curve 8520 would not let me install OS

I tried the first method, it prompted to update with desktop manager and lead to the same result, white screen with error, installer saying "Reconnecting to JVM" and in a few minutes it pops up with "Application Loader was unable to connect with your device".

The second method first sends me to download the OS from the same page that asks for information like "Job Title" and "Company". I don't even have a job, so I have no idea what to do there or why it would ask information like that for something as simple as an OS update... The rest of the instructions are just the "loader.exe" method.

The third method attempts to update similarly to the first with the same result... stuck at "Reconnecting to JVM"...

I tried with the desktop software, same result. But yes, I just want it up and running so I can use Whatsapp. That is my main goal here, I have contacts there I need to reach.

That method at the third link should work.

See this thread and the highlighted post....

Re: reconnecting to jvm alway fails - BlackBerry Support Community Forums

You may need to repeat it, and try the variation mentioned in that post.

The only other issue I can think of is problems with the connection to the device, or a problem with the device, but my gut feeling is you should be able to reload the OS.

I tried putting the battery during the "waiting for initialization" phase and it did the same as usual, initialized into error screen and stuck :/ I also tried waiting to see if it initializes without the battery and it did not, it just went straight to "reconnecting to JVM"

I'm stumped.

If you search (using Google or Bing) you will get lots of hits. Some found a solution only to have others say it didn't work for them. I don't know a for sure solution beyond what BlackBerry advises to reload the OS.

Re: Curve 8520 would not let me install OS

So far it looks like most solutions boil down to either updating through the desktop software or from an installed OS using the loader. Anyway, thank you so much for your help! I should be getting a new device soon, so I will not have to rely on the blackberry. I also used an emulator for my Whatsapp needs. I guess I'll stash the BB away until some miracle fix pops up :P Thanks again for your time! Sorry to bother you.
