App World is only Storefront which allows App Name Duplication
We have a successful and established on App World. After finally receiving some name brand recognition, we have an overseas pirate who not only copied the functionality, but is using the exact same name. I have contacted App World and RIM only to find out that I have to pay legal fees to get a trademark - which ends up taking over a year.
Other platforms like the Android and the iTunes store will reject your App if it shares the same name with an existing App. Additionally, they discourage Apps that have the same functionality. This, among many other policies, embraces developers as partners. Here is a great article on this topic. It may be that Blackberry doesn't have enough experience with App developers and hasn't thought this through. If you google "Should Application Storefronts Allow App Name Duplication Blackberrycool", you will find an interesting article on this. |
