t-mobile curve 9300 without data plan, wifi

Someone told me I can't use Wi-Fi on the 9300 without a data plan. But my Wi-Fi on my BB works connecting to my home's internet without a SIM card in it. What's the deal?

If Wi-Fi does indeed work on the 9300 without a data plan (T-Mobile), how would I set it up so there is absolutely no risk of being charged for data or other fees? In other words 100% Wi-Fi like my laptop?

Some carriers (AT&T and Verizon) require you to have a BB data plan before they will push the WiFi service book. Apparently T-Mo doesn't have that requirement.

Is it safe to assume that since I can use Wi-Fi without a SIM card that it will work with a SIM card?

I still need to know how to configure my BB (when my SIM card is in) so that there is no chance of getting fee'd from using Wi-Fi. Is setting the browser to the Hotspot browser enough?

yes setting browser to hotspot is enough.

Not to be annoying or anything but I need some reassurance. Does anyone else agree? Preferably someone else with personal experience? Also need the answer to the first question in post #3 (two posts above this one).

Yes, right now Tmobile is the last National carrier that allows free hotspot browsing on (some, not all) smartphones, but as they are the last, this can change at any time, so don't count on it forever.

Also you will be able to use the "Hotspot" browser, not the "Blackberry" browser, and remember you will not be able to use the Blackberry functions (push email, BBM, etc) unless you get a BB data plan. The Blackberry phone will allow you to connect to the internet, and go to websites, but alot of what the Blackberry does will not work without "Service Books" sent from the carrier (Tmobile) to your phone.

Rest assured, right now, if your phone connects to the internet on wi-fi, with or without a sim card, it doesn't matter, it will work either way, Tmobile will not send you a bill for data use.

Now, all the other carriers (Verizon, AT&-T-, Sprint) will find your phone connected to the internet, and start sending you bills (or just not connect at all) in a New York second. So remember it's only Tmobile phones that do this. So don't tell other friends with smartphones on other carriers that they can do what you do. What will happen to them will be just ugly if they try.

PS: Don't worry about using the wrong browser (Blackberry) because I'm pretty sure it won't work without "Service Books"

Wait...how come my Wi-Fi does not work when I turn "Data Services" off? That doesn't make sense, especially when it happens when there is no SIM card in the phone.

Probably because wifi is also considered data. So if data services is off, everything data related is off.

If you want to make absolutely sure that you are not using any pay as you go data, go to manage connections and then turn off your mobile network while you are browsing. Any calls will go to VM. A little inconvenient, but 100% guaranteed!
