RIM Confirms DataViz Acquisition

Research In Motion today confirmed reports that it has purchased business application developer DataViz. RIM said in a prepared statement, "RIM has acquired some of the assets of DataViz and hired the majority of its employees to focus on supporting the BlackBerry platform. Terms of the deal were not disclosed but the transaction was not material to RIM in the context of RIM's financial results." DataViz is known for its mobile Documents To Go software, which lets a number of smartphone platforms access and edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files.

Good move on RIM.

Of course I am kind of curious to what happens to my premium license in the future.
(especially the 2.0 upgrade I unhappily paid for to lol)

Wonder what RIM will do with DataViz in the future, besides further OS integration, and take Docs To Go away from it's competitors.

Why would RIM sacrifice existing clients? I'd think the smarter business decision would be to continue supporting all current Docs to go platforms - be they BlackBerry or otherwise.

I somehow doubt that would happen, DataViz has a great App, period.

I'm am sure it makes more sense for RIM to leverage that app for their platform only making the BlackBerry more marketable.

RIM would also be taking the away the features from other platforms making them look
less useful.

And if RIM supports DTG on the Palm/etc why would they want to help out the competition?

Perhaps they are more interested in the sync technology?

I've had that sync actually fail of me a few times.. In the end copy and paste was easier.

They probably want to integrate DTG with the OS like the social stuff from Viigo.

The competition would still have to buy/license DTG - which would result in revenue.

Also, remember from a business perspective SW licensing is basically a 100% profit game. vs selling subsidized hardware product.
