Verizon Storm Unlockable for use on ATT or T-mobile?

According to the specs the Verizon Storm will have be Quad band GSM/EDGE. I know it only has 3G 2100 for use in Europe. The verizon phone maybe much easier to get here in the US than the Vodaphone version. Additionally neither phone will support Tmobile 3g. GSM unlockable?

You can use the 9500 on T-Mobile here in the states. It will work on AT&T's 3G network, just not T-Mobiles.

Correct.

TroyDBrown 09-26-2008 05:04 PM

The Storm is being released on Vodafone, buy one there and unlock it. It is GSM.

Actually that is incorrect. As per the specs that have been leaked on blackberrynews.com the Verizon version of the Storm the Blackberry 9530 will be Quad Band GSM with UMTS 2100 AND Dual band CDMA Rev A. i.e. it it is a Verizon World Phone with the ability to operate on CDMA and GSM networks. So I was wondering if the GSM side of it would be able to be unlocked?

John Clark 09-26-2008 07:52 PM

Yes, it will be unlockable.

TroyDBrown 09-26-2008 07:56 PM

The only remaining question that we have not got an answer to is if unlocked will it operate on GSM with the presence of a Verizon CDMA signal.

This is 100% speculation on my part. Me along with other people at BlackBerryNews have been talking about how Verizon would possibly make sure the device could not be used on another carrier in the US.

hahahahaha

I just wish we could have a bb that could use tmo's 3G network...

hcheun 10-09-2008 03:22 PM

9500 = GSM Only = possibly unlockable but you need to go to the EU to get it (vodaphone, tmobile)

9530 = CDMA/GSM = No unlocking possible because primary radio will be CDMA and GSM/3G HSPA will be for international roaming capabilities

Though i think 9530 is great for only the near term, since it'll support those rare countries with CDMA, but in the long run, GSM devices will make better sense since LTE is the next path which Verizon is planning on jumping on!

earny99 10-09-2008 04:25 PM

If you look at the 8830 options, in mobile network there is a way to make it global, 1xev, or gsm only. So I wonder if the 9530 will have the same options and make it useable on att and tmobile.

That's not true! The 9530 will work on all 4 bands of GSM. Therefore, you can unlock it and use it on a GSM network in the US.

The BlackBerry Storm simulator (via RIM) gives you the option to choose between a GSM or a CDMA signal. So it should be conceivable that we can choose which network to run it on, whether it be GSM or CDMA. It should already be "Unlocked" given that it's a World Phone and it could be in an area where Vodafone does not have service.
