Latest OS: 9850 7.1.0.457/7.1.0.163 (All Languages)

Software For BlackBerry® Torch™ 9850 smartphone
This can be installed to any carrier's 9850 by following the instructions below.

BlackBerry Handheld Software v7.1.0.457 (All Languages)

Package Version: 7.1.0.457
Consisting of:
Applications: 7.1.0.163
Software Platform: 5.1.0.137
File name: 9850jAllLang_PBr7.1.0_rel457_PL5.1.0.137_A7.1.0.16 3_Sprint_L.P.exe
File size: 256.28MB
Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.

Download the OS file here: https://swdownloads.blackberry.com/D...58E6AF4B85849C

Instructions for installing on the 9850:
1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml." Vista/Win7 users: In the apploader folder, simply click on "Compatibility files" to see the actual Vendor.xml file. Once you've got that - simply delete the vendor.xml file there (even if you've deleted or think you've deleted it in the folder previously) and voila, it will allow you to update to the newly installed OS!
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process may take up to 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a black "BlackBerry" screen with a status bar for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again, and it should load the OS to the device.

All good this time, no freezing so far since the reload of 7.1 last night. I did have have to unplug the cable from my laptop after the reboot process, then it took right off and completed the loading of my data.

How do we go back to 7.0? I'm noticing that the update randomly seems to cause my ringer to go off and it constantly freezes. I sent one back last week after the power/end call button stopped, I sent the next one back today because of constant freezing and my phone failing to ring. Sprint couldn't even connect it to their software. I had the same issue. Fortunately, Sprint had one in stock so they replaced it again. I used it all day while out and about and it worked fine and rang when I got calls. When I got home, I restored it to the back up I did on December 18 before I started having issues and now it is freezing up again and the ringer is turning itself off. The weird thing is I am using a custom profile with different ring tones for different people. It had always worked fine. If I look at the ringer at the top of the screen, it is set for that profile yet I only know it is ringing if I am lucky enough to see it ringing.

It worked well for me initially too, but then I started noticing my proximity sensor was flashing all the time and emails in the notifications bar would not open if clicked on (everything else in the notification bar opened fine). Browser did seem quicker on wifi. I downgraded to 7.0.0.464 until the next 7.1 leak...

New board user here. I upgraded the operating system on my new Torch 9850 from 7.0 to 7.1. I decided to use the Blackberry Desktop Manager. All went okay at first but I suddenly got a message “driver did not install properly… device unplugged.” This was surprising, since the device was well plugged in.

I clicked away the message and the install continued along to “loading system software” and “loading application modules.” But it got hung up on the reboot section that says “Connecting to device (might take up to 30 minutes).” After about 15 minutes the cell phone came alive, asking me to turn on wifi (which I did), and even showing a video describing the BB operations. I waited a whole 60 minutes with no action. The green bar had stopped about 4/5 of the way across, maintaining its ongoing motion effect. So I unplugged the cell phone from the desktop. The latter had become frozen so I rebooted. Because the installation never got to the “reload” part I just synced contacts, etc. over from the desktop.

Phone seems to be working all right. Version is 7.1 Bundle 457 (c7.1.0.163). when I click “Check for Updates” I get “Your Blackberry is up to date.”

Is there any chance that the install is not complete? Should I install again or just keep it as is? I am looking forward to using the phone overseas so I am hoping that part of the OS got installed correctly.

Also, any ideas why the installation froze? Could having Norton 360 running in the background have caused it?

I have just noticed the instructions in the first message of this thread, about a suggested method for installing which includes downloading the OS file and removing a vendor.xml file. Is that a more reliable method than using the BB Desktop Manager? If so, why?

Thanks for all of the assistance everyone is providing on this board.
