Nextel/Sprint sim swap?

Hello!

New user here... looks like this forum has all sorts of great information on it.

Not sure where I should be posting this question. I have searched the forums for this question (like a good newbie  ) and while I have found similar threads, nothing unfortunately had all the answers I'm looking for.

I currently have a BB 7520 on the Nextel Network. While I love the BB for everyday use at work, this phone is just too large for evenings out at the bar/concert/golf course.

When I upgraded from the 7510 to the 7520, all I had to do was pull the sim card from the first phone and place it in the second and bingo - in business!

Now with the Nextel/Sprint merger - can I do the same with Sprint phones?

My goal is to find a small phone (preferably with a camera) that I can swap out sim cards when the need arises. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks!
Josh

I don't know for sure, but because Nextel uses iDEN and Sprint uses CDMA my first guess would be no. A Sprint phone won't work on Nextel's network (my belief is that the SIM card is tied to the specific network).

CDMA phones don't use SIMs. They use ESN numbers. There are some newer CDMA phones coming out in the future that use RUIMs which look like SIMs but are more advanced.

My bad. I know Sprint didn't use SIMs in the past, but I thought I had read that SIMs were coming out for CDMA devices a couple of years ago. It's been quite a few years since I used Sprint.

Wow!
You guys are fast!

Ok, first, thanks for the responses... let me try this from a different angle.

I have a BB 7520 with Nextel. What other phones can I use my sim card in? (I'm not bothered about having the Direct Connect feature either)

Thanks!
Josh

My suggestions would be i830 (very small) or i870 (very well featured).

Should be able to use it in any Nextel phone.

That is a true statement. I was just offering the guy some suggestions that met his criteria. :)

Ok, thanks.

Would an iDEN phone NOT from Nextel work? (is there such a thing?) I'd like to avoid that huge DC antenna if I can.

Thanks!
Josh

Yes, if they have been unlocked. However, you will not get away from the antenna, and your only choices besides a Nextel-branded phone would be a Boost, Southern LINC, or Telus MiKE phone

Ok, good to know.

Thanks dc/dc

Thanks all!

No problem. :)

The antenna is no bigger than the antennas included on most verizon phones. Just many Nextel ones have a load on the end.

The SIM for your blackberry should work in a Nextel phone. However a SIM from a nextel phone will not work in a BLckberry. (It will work as a phone in the BB but data will not work)

I tried this as I started with a I730 tried to put SIM in 7520 the phone worked but no data. So I bought a new sim for the 7520 and have put the new 7520 SIM into the I730 and both phones work with the BB SIM card. I cannot tell you if a Sprint phone will work but you can buy a NEXTEL camera phone and everything should work fine.

Hey sport, might I suggest reading before you post? Everything you posted has already been said in this thread, and the man's problems have been solved.

The SIM's from 6510, 7510 or 7520 units are 32K cards. While they will work with a 3 digit Mot phone - i730, i830 etc, you will lose certain functionality. The newer phones require a 64K or 128K card to support phone based Group Connect, assignable ringtones, etc.
MMS is also not suported on the 3 digit phones with the older 32K SIM cards.

Glendale_Josh 11-23-2005 03:49 AM

What about the i850, i860, and i870 phones? Forgive me - I have no clue what a "3 digit Mot phone is"!!!! What is MMS?

Thanks!
Josh

southwestcomm 11-23-2005 05:45 PM

The SIM's in the i860 is a 64K card. I don't know about the 850 and 870. Check the color. 64K cards are yellow and 128K cards are black. Phones with Direct Talk require the black SIM.
MMS is Multi Media Messaging - being able to send pics and text messages. All camera phones have MMS capability and the 7100 has MMS as well.

OK, thanks for the info!

Is it possible that my blackberry has a virus and can send viruses in a message.

Also, if someone sends me a message with a virus, will i send it on when I "reply to ALL?"
