Funambol Blackberry plug-in updated

If anybody is using the Funambol plug-in, there is a new version 3.08 available:

[NEW] Funambol blackberry client 3.0.8

I previously tried version 3.07 to back up contacts and calendar to the myfunambol portal and could not get it to work (probably user error on my part :oops: ). I tried this version and it works perfectly for me, so (y) and thanks to the funambol folks!

How does this app work?. Can I sync wirelessly my BB and zoho business? I'm looking forward to dump outlook!!

There are probably a number of folks here who know more about this, but here is the first paragraph from their FAQ's (Funambol: Services & Support: Frequently Asked Questions)

"Funambol is a mobile data synchronization server that provides push email and PIM synchronization as well as a platform for mobilizing applications. The server is part of an open source Community Edition as well as a commercial Carrier Edition. The company also offers an open source device management server that provides a framework for remotely managing mobile devices. "

I think it is really more designed for mobile phones and Windows mobile devices, but there is also the plug-in for Blackberries. You can sign up for a free account on my.funambol.com where you can wirelessly backup and sync your contacts and calendar from your Blackberry. I guess this could replace Outlook, depending on your needs. There is also a plug-in to sync between my.futambol and Outlook, but I haven't tried that.

For me this works well since it gives me access to my contacts and calendar from any computer if my Blackberry is not handy, or if I want to add some contacts using a real keyboard.

There is also Welcome to ScheduleWorld, but I didn't have much success with that (Again, could be my fault...)

The last time I looked at this there were a number of issues. Is there any documentation in terms of what's new with this client?

Yes, there is a file with some documentation at the original link. I don't remember what specifically didn't work for me when I tried this before, but it didn't sync. Loaded this version yesterday and synced without problems....

I assume you already set up your my.funambol account, correct? The server I use in the plugin is: my.funambol.com/sync and of course my user name and password for my.funambol

I got an open tunnel failure. Does it work with BIS-B connectivity?

3. KNOWN ISSUES

- Updated User Guide missing



- The current version works on 4.2 OS devices, with the following limitations:

  

  Calendar:

- When an All Day Event is added or modified on the server and synchronized to

  the device, there are the following known problems:



  - The month view shows one day less than the real appointment. If the all day

    was one day only, it does not appear in the month view.

  - The appointment details show a wrong end date (one day less), while the

    appointment duration is correct.



  Email:

  ------

  

- The Received date shown in the message list is always the time when the

  message is actually received on the device. Doing a sync of messages already

  present on the user inbox, they will result in having the same date.



- The current version of the plug-in has a limitation on the size of the

  received message. All messages are received, but filtered to get the first 13

  KB for each. 



- The current version of the plug-in does not handle mail attachments, so they

  are not transferred to the device.



- International characters in messages are not handled by the current version of

  the plug-in, so if the messages contains special characters they are not shown

  properly on the device.



  General:

  --------

  

- The Plug-in v. 3.0.8 does not start on devices with an OS older than 4.0.1

  (e.g. BlackBerry 7230) because the initial verification fails due to the use

  of APIs not supported by that OS version.



- Network problems with different combinations of devices/carriers were

  experienced. This issue is currently under investigation.

Open Tunnel failures (in any app) mean you need to fill in the APN for your carrier. See blackberryfaq.com for a list of the right values to shove in there, I'm not familiar with the Movistar Chile values you need.

So will Funambol let you sync your Contacts and Calendar wirelessly with a home computer running Outlook ?? Would you all go into a my.funambol account and then sync between the outlook at home and the blackberry?

Anyone know if this is what it does specifically? Would I need to set up some type of listening server on my home computer where my outlook resides?

You need a client on your PC to sync to a syncML server, and a client on your BB to sync from the syncML server.

Scheduleworld is one example of a free syncML server that allows folks to use it as the intermediary between outlook and the BB.

Nexthaus sells Outlook (and BB) clients that support syncing wirelessly using a syncml server. The funambol client referred to here is a free BB client that you could pair w/the $ nexthaus Outlook client.

This isn't terribly simple or terribly hard, but you'll have to do some reading/research to set it up.

There are three pieces to the equation:

1) your data on the BlackBerry
2) a plugin for the BlackBerry to "talk" to a server (SyncML specification)
3) a server that "talks" SyncML to combine with #2

Funambol and Nexthaus are #2 in the above list; they are merely plugins that know how to... 'speak the SyncML language' to transfer your data back and forth to a server.

Scheduleworld and Mobical are #3 in the above list; they are servers who know how to speak SyncML with any client who connects to them, as SyncML is a specification with rigid rules and so forth.

The basic concept is then plugging all three together; you install a client plugin on your device (#2), create an account on a server of your choice (#3), then take the information provided by #3 (server name, user name, password, etc.) and plug it into the client software (#2) on your device. The client software (#2) takes care of reading/writing the data from your BlackBerry (#1), so as you can imagine you need a data plan for internet access.

Before proceeding, ensure you've done a normal backup with the desktop tools in case something goes wrong - it happens.

could someone here confirm that funambol is running well with schedule world? i jumped ship a while back because of issues with these two, are they speaking to each other happily now???

addresses not carrying over to Blackberry address book

Hi all,

Today I installed the ScheduleWorld synching tools on my Samsung i730, Blackberry 8830 and Thunderbird 2.0 so I could get my contacts over to the Blackberry.

First I synced the Samsung. Went fine. Then I synced the Blackberry. The contacts come over, HOWEVER, the addresses did not carry over to the Blackberry.

Next, I installed the Thunderbird plug-in. Just to be sure, I checked a contact I knew was on all three devices. I had not physical address for him, but I did on the Samsung. After syncing Thunderbird with Schedule World I then had an address for him, meaning the address is definately up at Schedule World.

Anyone have a fix for this problem?

Install nexthaus. I have used the funambol and had so many problems. Never connected to the server or anything. I sent an email to the edevelopers and they said that they are looking into it and will get back to me in a week. Its been 3 months now and no reply. I sent an email again about the update on the issue but no reply. So lets forget that and get nexthaus. Also if you want two way synchronization to back up the phone numbers on blackberry then you should use zyb.com. Its is the best. Its has a user community also and also has more functions than any other phonebook backup software I have seen out there. If you want somehting very simple then get upviCe or upviSe.com. But its one way sync only.

I worked with Funambol a few months back (August) and did manage to get it working. It worked as advertised, syncing mail, calendar and contacts. I didn't have duplication problems and the push feature of the 6.5/7.0 server worked well.

My biggest complaints with Funambol are three. It uses it's own mailbox rather than the built-in one and quite frankly it is less comfortable to use. The second is that nothing is backgrounded the way standard BES/BIS syncing is. While it does operate in the background, it still seemed that I saw the Funambol client connecting every time I turned around. The third is that the client is WiFi-blind. It doesn't use WiFi ever, and if you turn off the cellular radio, the clients complain about lack of signal, even if you're fully connected on WiFi. This costs you extra data if you were counting on WiFi to keep you to a low byte count.
