Anyone get GPS working on 8800?

Does anyone have the GPS on 8800 working with any software?

SO FAR:-

Google Maps DOES NOT work with the 8800 (gives a Java runtime error)

BlackBerry Maps DOES NOT work with the 8800 (says Device not supported)

Anyone have any ideas? Suggestions? Advice?

Has anyone gotten the GPS with any software working successfully?

Some users claim that their 8800 unit came with the BlackBerry Maps application pre-installed.

Is there a way to extract that application from the OS on 8800 for users like me who did not have the BB Maps pre-installed on the unit?

SORRY SORRY SORRY -- Google does wonders

On the BB 8800 - type this into the browser: www.knology.net/~acidmax/blackberry/maps.jad

It'll download BB maps on your 8800 directly. Works like a charm. :)

Wirelessly posted (8700c: BlackBerry8700/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

What version is that? Where did the .jad come from. I posted to the Google forum re the 8800.

Its the BlackBerry Maps software in the JAD file. I found it on this same forum.

What did you post on the Google forum? Were you able to figure out how to install Google maps on 8800?

Just asked when it might be compiled.

Can you tell us if BBMaps on your 8800 has these features.

New features coming in the version for the 8800 include the ability to search for POI's, bookmark locations, and the following views. I will update this page when I get one.

Map view:

You can view maps, location markers, routes, and points of interest.

Directions Dashboard view:

You can view location markers, routes, text directions, and points of interest. You can also highlight and move between directions.

Directions List view:

You can view a list of all text directions.

Locations List view:

You can view a list of location markers and location information.

Locations Map view:

You can view routes, location markers, and points of interest on a map.

Navigation Dashboard view:

You can track your movement and view routes, location markers, and points of interest. You can also view other navigational

information such as upcoming streets, your speed, and your compass direction.

Navigation Map view:

You can track your movement and view routes, location markers, and points of interest.

For what it's worth, there's a problem with the 1.4.4 build currently propped to Google's servers. The file's way too small and I doubt it will work for any device. I had a 1.4.2 build converted over when I upgraded to the 8800 and it worked fine.

So if I have 1.4.4 on my 8700 and carry it over you think it will work. Time will tell.

Try this
(As seen in cingular web site)
Blackberry Wireless service from Cingular Wireless

Free Download

Get over-the-air TelNav Maps now!

Use this code in your BlackBerry Pearl's browserxxx8212; http://ota.telenav.com/ota/tn-maps/

No idea if the 8800 works with this link..

You're saying Google Maps Version 1.4.2 works on your 8800 GPS?

Let me try that. I'll post results.

For your answers Stinsonddog, I've attached pictures.

These pictures are from BB Maps downloaded Over The Air from this link: http://www.knology.net/~acidmax/blackberry/maps.jad

Yes, Google Maps opened fine after the upgrade. However, for some reason, I decided to make sure that I had the current version and I deleted it and went for 1.4.4. Doh!

I also note that the file had a -0- size for most of the day on Google's servers, so I'm firmly in the camp that the current version is uniquely hosed up.

Thanks for the link for BB Maps though! That will give me something to play with as I wait. <g>

Those seem like the old version. Can you look up POI's? When in a map can you see any of the views listed?

jyamani 02-17-2007 10:47 PM

Yes, I believe it IS the old version. Unfortunately, www.blackberry.com/maps does not support the 8800 device just yet, so I had to settle for what I could get my hands on for now.

And no, cannot look up POI.

When in maps, you can press the SPACE BAR to get the written directions on the half screen

blackbear2007 02-17-2007 10:47 PM

thanks

That's just bizzare that they don't have it ready yet

Actually, nothing works -- you can't download themes or tones either because they say the device is unsupported. No doubt this still will all start working on the official release date.

heck, even Cingular's site doesn't work. Right on the box, they say to go to http://www.cingular.com/tutorials/blackberry8800 and there's nothing there...

jyamani 02-17-2007 11:04 PM

Google Maps 1.4.4

I got this link, and then downloaded Google Maps Over-The-Air on the 8800. Everything works perfectly, except that the 1.4.4 version from Pearl does not have GPS capability. Sad, I know.

http://www.google.com/gmm/apps/v1.4....00_v4_0_L1.jad

Does anyone know what version of Google Maps has the GPS capability? I have Google Maps for Pocket PC on my HP HW6945 and that works just great with GPS.
