Are BBs 3G capable ?
 

Currently i believe T-Mobile uses EDGE which is a variant of the 2.5G standard (3G technology is very expensive to incorporate I hear)...

I also have a Motorola Razr V3X that I used to use on Tmo and it is a 3G capable phone, but it was meant for 3 Networks in Singapore. When I used it, it would fluctuate between 2G and 2.5G (Icon status).

are GSM-based Blackberry devices 3G-Capable ? What's the situation on Verizon's 8800, is that 3G capable ? I know it's a dual use CDMA/GSM phone.

To the date the only BlackBerry GSM/CDMA 3G capable is the 8830 know as "World Edition", as it is an hybrid of CDMA/EVDO and GSM/EDGE

this is disappointing because i'd have to get my hands on that particular phone if I wanted to have a 3G phone for overseas use, and the only way to get a BB is to wait for someone to put one up for sale or switch service provider....

Correct. In Europe. Different version of the network in the States. The best you could do here is GPRS with that model.

None of T-Mobile BB is 3G capable. T-Mobile has been so busy to implement 3G systems and expect them to roll out at end of this year or early next year. Of course the cell phones have to be a 3G capable.

You can always check on device specs at Blackberry.com. If 3G isn't listed as a feature it's not a feature of the device you're looking at.

The 8707g is 3g as stated - i am in australia and am getting my first BB the 8707g.... cannot wait!!!

when i get bored of my pearl (which will be a while) i'll trade up to the latest and greatest after 3G is implemented....

i'm leaning towards the Curve....

That's just GSM/GPRS in the 8830... no EDGE in it.

8830 is not 3G - it's called world edition because it is multi-band including GSM and CDMA.

Blackberry has 3 3G devices including 8707g, 8707v and 8707h. 8707g can be found with various carriers in Europe and Asia, 8707v is mainly with Vodaphone UK (and others), while the 8707h is strictly for Japan with NTT Docomo. These 3 devices are essentially the same, just difference cases.

I'm currently using an unlocked 8707g (originally from O2) with a T-Mobile SIM card, reason being that I'm currently on a project in Korea/Japan. I get great 3G service here on the 8707g!

I'm hoping to see the O/S 4.2 upgrade for the 8707's soon!

Actually, it is... but only in the US. The CDMA side of the 8830 uses EVDO, which is a 3G wireless technology.

The 7250, 7130e, 8703e and 8830 are also 3G wireless devices. They just use CDMA instead of GSM.

(Not that any of the above matters to someone using the device in Singapore or most places outside the US, of course.)

i am curious about this. i can never use my cingular bb locally in korea on because of cdma vs gsm. how are you using a bb from TMo with sim card?

Sorry but 8830, 7250, 7130, etc. are NOT 3G. They are tehnically 2.5G (which is what some call it) but it's just CDMA EV-DO service. 1G, 2G, 2.5G, 3G, etc. simply refers to the speed of download and since EV-DO have achieved decent level of download speed, some ended up calling it 3G as well.

True 3G is UMTS, a service that currently only exists in a few countries in Asia (Korea, Japan, HK, Singapore, etc.) and Europe (France, Italy, etc.). Cingular has just launched UMTS service in the US and T-Mobile is planning to launch later this year.

8830 uses 2.5G CDMA EV-DO service which has been in Korea / Japan for years (as well as Verizon Wireless in the US). For the example of Korea, they have only earlier this year launched the officialy 3G UMTS service which is how I am roaming with my 8707g.

It's unfortunate how some people call a device like 8830 3G but it really isn't...

Google UMTS and you'll see what I mean...

You need Blackberry 8707v, 8707g or 8707h to work in Korea or Japan because they are the only ones that work over the new 3G UMTS network (no GSM in Korea/Japan). Me and my co-workers use 8707g and 8707h and they work great.

You will need to get an unlocked 8707v, 8707g or 8707h and use your cingular SIM card to get it to work in Korea. I'm not certain if the Cingular SIM card works but I can try and look for one for you...

Why don't you Google 3G, or visit 3G Today and see that Verizon Wireless is all over the website. EV-DO is considered 3G.
