backup and restore???

i know there is a backup and restore function in the blackberry desktop program to backup your data (contacts, calender etc.) but i want to know can it also backup your programs (google maps & talk, terminal service client, texas hold tem, citimobile, jmirc). u get the picture.

some program i paid for it and it require a serial key. i have no ideas where it is the serial key now...so if i were to backup and restore my programs on another blackberry im planning to buy..would i get all those programs back by using backup and restore function? yes or no? thx in advance.

You will get most of your third party add-on applications, not all. I don't know which ones you will not get, but you will get most of them.

If you use the Switch Device wizard in Desktop Manager, you will get all of your applicatiions. It is much easier.

Remember also, that regardless of your restoring all the third party apps, some apps are tied to the PIN of the BB on which they are installed. You may have to contact the retailer/developer to get that app working again.

Good luck.

ok update...i do not see the option "switch device" wizard in the blackberry desktop software.

im using blackberry desktop manager ver. 4.1.0.8. and i have a 7130c blackberry.

in the backup and restore function...all it gave me was an option to save a file name in the extension .ipd file. and it seems just to backup contacts, calenders, task etc. just as i expected.

so can any1 here enlighten me how to backup all my programs on my blackberry ansd switch it to another blackberry? thx in advance.

fyi...i also downloaded 4.2 desktop manager and that software was just an icon on the systray and i dont even see the option to backup and restore anywhere let alone "switch device" feature!!!!

gziz 08-07-2007 10:44 PM

you wont get your any third party apps doing a backup and restore because that only backs up data and not the apps.

JSanders 08-07-2007 11:07 PM

gziz, you will get some, not all, of your third party apps using back up/restore. It backs up much more than only your data.

Vincent., all I can say is that Switch Device Wizard is absolutely included in Desktop Manager Version 4.2, either Service Pack 1 or 2. You have to actually click Desktop Manager and open it, not just let it sit in the systray. You will find both Backup/Restore along with Switch Device.

If it is not in your version, then that is an anomoly, and you are one of a very few.

Good luck with it.

Yes I right click the systray and the only option is exit and properties. When I go into properties it has different menu option. None of which has backup and restore. And when I go into start>programs>blackberry>blackberry desktop. Same thing as the one when I right click and properties.

Maybe I need service pack 1 and 2 like you said?

JSanders 08-08-2007 12:00 AM

Vincent, get away from right clicking it and just double click it (left click!) and open Desktop Manager. If not from the systray, do it from the icon THAT SHOULD be on your desltop.

Are you using Desktop Manager 4.2, Service Pack 1 as was suggested?

ahh, ^^ thank you Spectral. Very nice.

How'd you get a screen shot of my desktop?

vincentnyc 08-08-2007 07:25 AM

Thx spectra. When I install 4.2. I didn't even get the blackberry desktop icon shown on ur screenshot. All I got was the blackberry device manager which explain I don't see backup and restore and switch device features. Hmmm...weird.

I'm gonna go home and do it again tonite with sp1.

Another quick question. When you use switch device feature. Do you need the 2nd blackberry right there with you? Cuz I don't plan to get my 2nd blackberry like in 2 month down the road.

takeshi 08-08-2007 07:36 AM

I don't think you did a full install if you only have the Device Manager...

vincentnyc 08-08-2007 05:15 PM

update: downloaded the correct file and saw the "switch device" feature. i went thru the whole process backing up data and third party apps. and in fact it did said to connect the new blackberry device after it finish backing up. but since i dont have the new blackberry device yet i just hit cancel button.

but it did create one .ipd file which is about 2.4 MB the same size which i ran the ran a backup function last nite with the 4.1 desktop director. so my question is do u guys think that .ipd will have my third party apps once i when i use the restore function when i get the new bb? im leaving my job and will have to give this bb back so when i get the new bb i wont have the old bb. so any1 knows?

Wirelessly posted (8700g: BlackBerry8800/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Vincent, re: your third applications--hasn't that question been answered twice already. Scroll up.

Spectral 08-09-2007 01:04 AM

Go through the first part of the Switch Device Wizard. When it prompts to connect the new device, don't cancel yet, but instead do this:

Start, Run, type: %TEMP%

Look for a directory with the same name as your BlackBerry PIN. Your applications are contained within. Archive the directory. You can use it to restore your apps whenever you want.

thx spectra...i got that folder and inside that folder contain all of the programs i have. now when i get the new bb...how would i restore them back?

do i use application loader? or do i use the restore function? and what about some programs that had serial key? would i need to put in the serial key again? please let me know..thx.

Spectral 08-09-2007 07:08 PM

You can use Application Loader. Your registration status can be restored from the .ipd file, however keep in mind that some programs tie your registration to your device PIN. The ability to transfer your license to your new device will depend on the developer.
