No email/IM's on BB without data plan sucks. pls help.

I would just like to know if there is anyway so far to allow you to use the BB phone's email/IMs services without a data plan, like jailbreaking or unlocking the phone etc.

Welcome to the forums.

No. That's the answer. There's no way around it.

BB Working on BES w/no data plan...

If anyone is interested...

I got the bb email to work on a bes using wifi with no data plan doing the following
1) setup wifi and make sure it's working by going to "manage connections" then "wifi options", hit the menu button and choose "wifi tools" then "Wifi Diagnostics" and you should see an IP address from DHCP.
2) From the main menu choose "manage connections" again and disable "mobile network"
3) take the bb and usb pc cable over to your bb server (at least this works w/version 4.0) and plug the bb into the one of the servers usb ports.
4) You can let your server search the internet for available drivers for your device. automatic update actually found the BB smartphone driver off of microsoft's website and installed it successfully.
5) open your Blackberry Manager on the server and right click on the TOP node in the left tree-view. Make sure you are right clicking on the top one with the little globe next to it and choose properties. Click the "ports" tab and then make sure USB is selected and click detect. Don't worry this won't mess up your current server with 100's of people already using it. It should detect the PIN number of your handheld. then close this screen
6) now add a NEW user, make sure it's a new mailbox enabled user with no prior bb settings stored in thier mailbox. it should automatically assign the USB PIN info to this user within the Blackberry Manager.
7) open the user's properties and set a password and close the property sheet
8) disconnect the blackberry from the bes server.
9) on the phone go to settings - options - advanced and choose TCP/IP and set the apn to the domain name and uncheck the authentication.
10) within settings - options - advanced - Enterprise Activation set the email and password and for "activation server address" put in your bb server full DNS name.
11) activate your phone
12) Your wifi emblem at the top of your phone MUST be in bright white like the other words on the screen.
13) in the end, I could send/recieve email and use the global address lookup

There is a BES data plan, but I have BBs working with my BES Wi-Fi only without SIM cards. It has limited use, but since the data does not traverse the ROC or the wireless carrier network you don't need a data plan to do it.

I have cancelled the data plan on my BB 9700. I can access browser, youtube etc. using Wifi but can't run email (gmail, hotmail) which I already set up when had data plan. Pl help if it could be fixed, thanks

Read the answers above please. You must have a BB data plan for any RIM based service to include email, BBM, the BB browser, Facebook, etc.

And it is bad manners to hijack another's thread.

But again, you have a BES plan wich on the rim side says hey, i have a data plan so im allowed access.

BES BIS same diff, its a blackberry data plan. One for corporates and one for individuals.

super_paws 05-19-2010 08:52 PM

Damn RIM... What would we do without them..

Lanky0 05-22-2010 07:58 AM

man thats annoying, is this the same with all BB's or only certain models?

NJBlackBerry 05-22-2010 08:39 AM

All BBs. If you want to use all of the BlackBerry functionality you must have a BlackBerry Data Plan. No way around it.

Yes, the reason why it works is because the individual has a BIS/BES data plan on the account. Whether he/she is actually using the carrier for data is irrelevant (i.e. if he/she is using WiFi). The only important thing is that there is a BIS/BES data plan on the account for it to work... you don't have to be using the carrier's data at that point (you can use WiFi).

Without a BIS/BES data plan on the account, WiFi won't work for e-mail, instant messages, and other applications that go through RIM's servers.
