Blackberry Curve 8520 Setup help
 

Hi,

Firstly I would like to apologise if this thread seems pretty silly. I am having trouble setting up my Blackberry device, mostly with the wifi and email. I have managed to set up the wifi on my phone but it has a white line next to it when I look at the connections. Also, is it possible to set up a new email account specifically for my blackberry? How do I set them up? I haven't been sent any passwords or anything. Should I have been?

Sorry if this seems really petty. Technology is not my strong point.

Not that I know of. I'm on o2 and my contract includes 100mins and unlimited texts. Not sure if that is any help though. How would I find out if I have a data plan?

Must have a BB data plan for email, BBM, the BB Browser and many other data related apps.

You would be paying for the blackberry data service if you had it.

Also, I suspect what you are seeing on the wifi is because of the fact the you do not have a blackberry data plan. That is, your blackberry cannot connect to the RIM network, and you are seeing the indication of that.

Talk to your carrier, or check their website. You may be able to add it to your account online. If not, call customer service.

Hi there! Just bought a BBerry 8520 and I have similar doubts.
I don't know what data plan I have and I don't care. Not going to spend one more single € on a phone service.

I just want to synchronize my outlook email with BB by wireless/USB/bluetooth and be able to read it when I'm out of office.

Should be a simple task, but I've just spend 4h looking at it and I'm missing stuff like an "Email Setup" icon...
The weird thing is that my contacts, etc are synchronized and I can even see my outlook's email folders, but with no messages in it...

Although I'm a hardware/software developer, I'm not a power user, I just keep it simple. I don't even write SMS!! But I want to see my email offline... is it too much to ask??

Blackberrys don't work that way. They don't sync e-mail; it is forwarded (real time or near real time) as part of the BlackBerry Data Plan.

You can synchronize contacts, note, tasks and calendar items, but you can't sync e-mail.

Gotta have a BB data plan add on to get email and any other RIM related services. No way around it.

Maybe the BB is the wrong device for you?

I had a PDA 7y ago that did email sync... so we're going BACKWARDS???

One more question: what if I sync it directly with my exchange server? It has certificate, it is just a normal intranet server that I can connect through VPN or from within the office.

Don't be silly. Microsoft does NOT have 70% of any smartphone market. Please.

You should have read up first before 1) buying a BlackBerry and 2) making silly claims.

There are many ways to get e-mail to a BlackBerry. Start by checking out BlackBerry FAQ - BlackBerryFAQ

1) I have read my Carrier info about BB and it stated "Outlook sync". It had NO "*" in it saying I had to subscribe any plan. That's deceiving advertisement (hidden costs) and more than enough reason to return it to the store.

2) I'm willing to give BB a go if I can do a sync with the intranet exchange server without a plan. Is it possible?

3) Is it possible to do 2) with a third party application?

Return the BlackBerry immediately.

The blackberry is different.

And the more times that shops and kiosks sell a BB without the appropriate BlackBerry Data Plan, the more these questions will come up.

I agree with NJBB and Ira.

The BB is not for you. Yes, you can do Outlook sync. It will sync your calendar, contacts, notes and other PIM data, but not your email. For that, you will need a BlackBerry data plan. And on top of that, if you want to use it for Exchange, you will most likely needs a BlackBerry Enterprise Data Plan unless your company offers OWA.
