SMS message question

I rec'd my first SMS message today. Took a little research to figure what it was.

The phone vibrated twice, when I took it out of the case there were no message indicators on the locked screen nor when I unlocked it. When I looked at the message screen I saw the italicized envelope. There was no return address or name. Why is that? I've never used SMS before nor has anyone ever sent a message this way. It was a ligitemate message relating to a current event I am involved with.

Could the complete message have not come through?

By what you are saying, I would guess you have a Nextel. Nextel does not support true SMS messaging. You can receive a text message but you can't see who it's from or reply to it.

That makes a lot of sense. Why would Nextel do it like that?

Thanks for the info.

Almost like talking to my wife except I know it's her speaking...

From other posts on text messaging, the iDEN network doesn't support it. For me, I honestly don't care as I probably wouldn't text message anyway. I can send/receive email which to me is a much better option. I don't have anyone I need to communicate with that I can't do either by the DC or by email. I understand that for others text messaging may be a good option, but it's not necessary for me.
