Unable to use App World..

I can download google programs, but when it starts up, it says there's no data connection. This also applies to facebook, and other software. And app world says I need to use a blackberry to access the site. But I'm on a blackberry!!

Is it necessary to have a data plan? I'm using my 8820's WiFi.
