Jeez, sometimes I think I am too thick for words. The problem was that somehow [and God alone knows how] all my calender entries in Outlook had been deleted, so of course when I sync it to my phone....

Yep, tried that! it all looks good. When it does the sync-ing it shows that it doing stuff to do with calender yet when I go to look on the phone - nothing!

I have just got my 8100 back from being repaired [trackball sticking!] but now when I try to sync with outlook it does copy my contacts across but not my calendar. The repairer said he " reflashed"...
