update
ok, so the BB device is a slave device, and so is the standard USB keyboard. You can't connect a slave to a slave. You must get a Master keyboard device, hence the price of all those ones...

that doesn't work
I purchased a female/female converter and hooked it up to the data cable on one end and the standard $14 usb keyboard on the other end... no go.
