Just on a whim, did you try a hard boot of the BB, the battery pull?...

Are you saying that email is only pushed with BES and not BIS?
I'm not clear as to why you think BIS wont work for you?

Sounds like an issue connecting to Gmail to verify email address and password. Have you tried to go to gmail and log in to verify the account is working fine? Try changing your gmail password?
