There is actually a message that has the same icon. Look through your messages for an unread message, after you read that the icon should go away. At least that's what solved it for me.

From my experience, If I deleted John Doe from my Blackberry, all the messages and my PIN is deleted from John Doe's Blackberry as well. In that respect, I think the PIN is more secure than an email...

Even if you don't have BES, you can still use the BB with IMAP, POP3, or OWA. The only thing is, you'll have a 15 minute delay in receiving messages that way and only 1 way sync instead of 2 way.
