if (null == nameEditField.getText() ) should work.

an alternative is to check
if (0 == nameEditField.getTextLength() )

nameField.getText() would give you the text value contained in this field.

The typical way one would check it is based on some action, in a Listener method e.g. you check the value of the edit...

If XML parsing is your only concern, then you could use standard XML parsers that can parse the response of your web service. kxml2 (part of the ksoap2 suite) would serve your purpose. kxml2 doesnt...

Avoid ksoap2

Had spent time importing ksoap2 classes, then sources in my project in order to access web services. Doing it manually is a mess, you dont need to do that anymore.

Download the ksoap2 j2me jar...
