Thank you, NJBB, for the UMA info. It's been a few hours and the battery is still at full capacity. One problem is relieved at least.

Downloaded the latest OS per NJBB's advice. Will hope for the best. Device screen still reads UMA instead of EDGE, but not having trouble connecting to the 'net yet.
