I have classic and he has a iPhone - isn't a issue here.

I would delete the contact - add him again - check for this problem.

I assume tsac proposed the same solution.

Did you try re-booting? taking backup and restoring?

It should not be a google issue!

Find a permanent solution for it rather going for temporary solution!
