3G to Edge switching

my phone seems to try to hold on to a 3G signal until its nonexistant. Would rather drop a call then switch over to EDGE. Is this an OS issue or hardware? Any ideas? I'm still running the most...

Switched to 2G only mode and its been much better. Kind of frustrating because 3G worked better on my 9000.
