From my very limited personal experience with this particular type of issue, it is a good sign if the device charges on a wall charger connected to the USB. At the the connector isn't broken...

My advice is try a RIM cable. I expect the aftermarket cable should work, but perhaps not.

The statement that the device was connected to a pc to unlock it is worrisome. I won't go into it, but it is possible the device has been damaged by what the person did.
