EDGE is available outside of London, although doesn't cover as much of the UK as GPRS (around 50% last time i heard). The O2 website should give you a coverage map to check whether EDGE is available...

It may also be worth backing up the device... a) in case this happens again and b) if the device gets lost/stolen you'll lose your SIM too and you won't be able to restore the contacts again.

Usually the handset would go back via the network for repair although if you're now on o2 then they won't accept a Voda handset, and Vodafone may not accept it if you no longer have an active account...

Try entering *0# at the start of an SMS message - this should give you a delivery report. I think you need to leave a space after the # before putting the body of the text.
