Check the ringtone settings in the "Profiles", for each selection (Loud, Vibrate, Quiet, Normal, etc.). It's not on Quiet, is it?

Make sure that the OUT OF HOLSTER and IN HOLSTER preferences...

Had an 850 & 950. Very easy to type. The best keyboards of the RIM devices, I believe.

Had a 7230 and 7250. Almost as easy as the 850/950 series. Certainly no complaints. Rarely a mistake...
