As AT&T and VZW use different radio versions then the Torch as is would not work on VZW. The only way it will is perhaps with the rumoured Torch 2 coming later in the year (maybe) if they release it...

I'm not sending ours back as it really isn't causing any issues. I guess if you feel strongly enough about it you could go into your local shop if you can and compare it to others and then decide.
