Awesome fix, this worked brilliantly, and gmail has the ability to remove/merge duplicate contacts...unfortunately I found that out after manually deleting over 600 contacts...

go to the options panel and disable both convenience key actions...
it's by default programmed to shut it down once open...set both keys to "Do Nothing" and you should be fine!
