I think it's a OS 4.5+ and MIDP issue. When running OS 4.2, the convenience keys worked in most of my MIDP apps. Under 4.5 they do not work in any MIDP app.

It is a little yuck. After you get to the shell prompt, try hitting the menu button and choosing "Type". That lets you input directly to the command line and makes a big difference for useability.
