Maybe it's because I installed 3rd-party apps before doing a restore. I figured that the data wouldn't restore without an associated app.

No, it didn't do a backup & restore. I had to reinstall 3rd-party apps & restore my data. I used the DM, & I see that I should have used the loader app.
