Unable to register handset with BIS

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but for the last few days we have been unable to register a Pearl 8120 with O2 UK. Apparently any PIN that begins with 254 (and another one which I don't know about) will not register on BIS. O2 say the problem isn't to do with their network and they are now waiting on RIM to respond. I was also told it only affects Pearl handsets but not sure if this is correct.
We have tried the other options, i.e. advanced options > host routing table but still does not work. The mail setup icon doesn't appear on the handset either.
