Go to phone dialer
Click Blackberry button and select "Options"
Scroll down to "Enhanced Audio" and click trackball/enter
Change "Automatic Volume Control" to "Enabled"

I have to say this dramatically improved the quality for me, and prevented Verizon from seeing me return this phone.

Please don't criticize me for creating a duplicate post on this matter. The other threads on this topic have veered so far off topic, you have to sift through pages and pages of random information, so I thought it best to create this "5 second" fix.
