Well he was likely to win in the future anyway for some tenuous reasons. They've just gotten it out of the way early enough to show what a farce it is.
I think they're trying to influence action in Afghanistan as well. Can you imagine a Nobel Peace Prize winner ramping up there? I think they hope that thought echoes through the WH.
I imagine Bill Clinton hit the roof when he heard about the award. Carter won, Obama won, and even Clinton's VP won. Guess they didn't like Clinton's capital gains tax cuts.
