Your gonna see 3G (dots) because you have that data connection, not seeing it when using it.
I always kept my Bold on 2G because of poor 3G in certain areas of my house. I always saw GPRS as network connection, whether I was browsing the internet or not.
That is the connection you have, not "im using this connection".
It wont change when you try to use WAP.
