You do. You can set the number of rows of icons at 2, 1 or none. That's about it. That scroll bar is not very "thick". I don't personally believe it to take up too much space. I use berryweather and so I am using the bw wallpaper so that I can have my weather icon on the home screen. I also have it set to show just one row of icons. IMHO, the screen is not too crowded.
