I'm slightly confused. I'm buying a brand new 9700 of a private seller today. The first thing I'm going to do is to make sure the phone is not stolen.

The problem is that the phone is Pay as you go, this means it is unlocked to any network. When I get the IMEI I have to contact the carrier, but because it's unlocked there is no carrier. Does this mean that I have to call RIM UK and check if the phone is stolen? No-one seems to know ???????
