Not entirely true. According to the video interviews posted on Engadget there are 3rd party e-mail clients, like gmail. In addition, there are e-mail, PIM and Calender apps coming, but at launch there will just be the Bridge.

There are always options that are web based - Google calendar,...

It makes sense - RIM, for security reasons, has to keep coporate data from being stored on the playbook.
