Actually, this still only applies to POP3. I have accessed my e-mail by both IMAP and Exchange (RPC) and that's not true. As long as the e-mail actually remains in the mail server's Inbox - whether read or unread, the message will be pulled and delivered as new. For example, RIM downloads my e-mail and delivers it every 15 minutes. If an e-mail arrives and I have Outlook open and I read the e-mail first, RIM still delivers it to my BB as a new message. It results in having to open it on the BB, or using the "Mark Prior Opened" option so that it doesn't show as new on the phone. This happens regularly during my work-day every single day.

With a computer polling by POP3 where the PC is downloading the message and then DELETING from the server's Inbox, then the RIM server never has a chance to see the message was there and hence why it never gets delivered to the phone. That can be resolved by using the "Leave Copy on Server" option.
