I just received my Pearl on the 16th upon opening the box and inserting the battery I noticed the red line across the battery. I immediately called Sprint, I was told that the red stripe across the battery does not indicate water damage, the only water damage indicator is located inside the phone not on the battery.
You might try fighting this, ask them to show you the internal water damage indicator.
