I believe there are things you can do that make a difference at the margins. But in the end you have to do what you have to do and deal with the consequences. So, do what you do and buy a new battery if and when you need to.

I generally top off the battery whenever possible and still charge when I sleep. Sometimes I run the battery down into the red. In all these years I've had one battery start failing on me. In all other cases I have handed my BlackBerry down to my wife with the original battery, and she has used it until the next hand me down.
