Try version 5 or 6. They should work with XP. You need 4.2 or earlier for Windows 2000 and/or Office versions 2000 and older.

Try the switch device wizard or if you sync to Outlook, them that should also work with the 7290. If you have the 8700 per your profile, that should also work.
