In the Bold 9000, when you tethered the phone and used it as a modem, it would disconnect from the Blackberry BES/BIS network. So you would not receive any incoming email on the BB while you were in the "Modem enabled mode". In the 9700 that behavior is different - you continue to receive emails on the BB even when you are in the modem mode.
